screw-on hood for 50/1.4 aspheric

The built-in hood of the 50/1.4 asph extends only 5-6 mm beyond the filter glass of the UV/IR-Cut filter the M8 needs.

I'd like something more efficient.

Due to the crop factor, I figure a pretty narrow one to screw into the filter would work and was thinking about trying the 12460 hood made for the 75 & 90 Summarits.

Has anyone tried that combination, or have something else to recommend?

Thanks.

The Summarit hoods screw onto the OUTSIDE of the Summarit lenses, (i.e. the hoods have female threads) so they won't work on other lenses.

There's this - don't know how it compares to the Heavystar - looks very much like the Leica hood provided for the pre-built-in-hood, pre-ASPH 50 f/1.4s:

Andy--

Wow, you saved me from an expensive mistake. I knew the Summarit hoods were peculiar in some way, but I didn't know that was the problem!

I'll look into the other models suggested. Many thanks to all!

EDIT--

Oops--searching Heavystar for "lens hood" returns 0 items. :(

This is fine for a 50 mm lens on 35-mm full-frame format but too short for a 50 mm lens on the M8.

Howard, have a look at the telephoto hoods from Heliopan—there also is an English-language PDF document describing the Heliopan products.

The pre asph Summilux I havehas the same 'problem', the Fotodiox one looks just the thing, I must get one, just like the 12585.

I have the heavystar vented hood, trouble is the hood part is straight sided and thus intrudes (slightly) into the bottom corner of the viewfinder frame. I also ahve a straight 46mm screw in hood and that flares out from the screw thread and thus also intrudes, if it did not have the flare (i.e came out straight from the thread) it would be good.

The generic collapsible rubber hoods work well - I have one on an asph 50 and the pre-asph 50 and neither intrudes on the image when shooting either film or with the M8. They provide more protection from flare and, because they're rubber, they serve well to cushion any unfortunately impacts.

I am a great fan of these hoods in general, but on the Leica they intrude on the viewfinder too much to be useful (IMHO)

Schneider 46mm # 950. Must be branded B+W now i guess. Works fine with the 50/1.4 asph as well. Blocks a bit the 50mm frame lines of the M8 but does not touch the 75mm ones at infinity.

Terry--Thanks! I can never find anything on their site. I've ordered it.

I'm trying a couple other solutions as well as that one. Found a rubber B+W version, but I couldn't find the tubular one you show, LCT. BTW, that's a good-looking silver camera! :) Welcome to the fold, and let us know whether you don't end up preferring it to the R-D1.

Amazing how much money you can save/spend on hoods and snapcaps when you just found out the $90 Summarit hood won't work!

Andy, I'll try the Fotodiox as well, as soon as I find something to pair with it for free shipping. ;)

Olaf, thanks for the Heliopan recommendation. They seem to have the proper solution, but I'll have to find a retailer. This is the first time I've seen their whole catalog, so thanks for the heads-up!

Sounds like there is one 46mm B+W metal hood # 950 here:

Preferring the M8.2 over the Epsons? In some circumstances yes, typically landcapes in color at low isos where the M8's IQ looks second to none. Or with wider lenses than 28mm where the microlenses of the M8 show their superiority over the Epson's. Otherwise, it's like comparing the M3 to a M4-2 with mandatory filters and motor winder. See a little comparo here FWIW: Rangefinderforum.com - View Single Post - Thinking about buying M8.
