Looking for a M8

If you fancy an M8 with sapphire LCD screen, shutter 'upgrade', vulcanite skin, and black paint body; go M8.2, if not... go M8.

If spending the extra £500-ish on a .2 means you can't afford the glass you want, go M8.

Either way; you'll love it. This camera gets under your skin.

Ludders, welcome to the Forum!

I agree with the above recommendations but would urge you to keep the X1 as a companion to the M8. The trade-in allowance would barely buy you a modern Leica lens, yet it would complement your M8 with a non-35mm lens. (X1 equivalent focal length). If on a tight budget, retain the X1 and buy an older Leica lens for your M8.

Buy the best condition M8 that you can afford, use it and enjoy it. Then decide if you want to do the shutter upgrade, rangefinder mask, Vulcanite cover, and sapphire LCD cover later. Leica will renew the warranty to the camera for an additional year after any work they perform on the camera.

Save the money and go for an M8. The extra money for the "upgrades" are really not worth it in my opinion. The extra cash saved could be the difference between a 35mm Summarit (no slouch) and a 35mm Cron ASPH (legend).

The reason I went for the M8.2 over the M8 is that the M8's framelines are optimized for 1 meter while the M8.2's is optimized for 2 meters. In every day use (i.e. I'm not always 3 fee from my subject), my M8.2 feels more accurate than my M8... but of course, up close (3 feet or so) the M8 is more accurate.

JS - That's an interesting and common argument for the M8.2 (I have read it many many times here on the forum for being the determining factor to go M8.2 over the M8).

Can you speak more too "how much more accurate" it is? I know it's subjective and I have tried an M8.2 for the frameline-accuracy before, but not extensively enough to make a decision.

Well, I don't know how to explain it any better than the regular M8 (and M9) are only going to be completely accurate at one meter. The M8.2 is completely accurate at 2 meters. I believe many shoot at 2 meters more than at 1 meter. Also, the original M8 when shooting at long distances adds a lot to your photo than the M8.2 does. That said, I'm going to get the M9 soon and will have to deal with that again. Most people won't get it unless they used both extensively.

Yes reason why i prefer the M8.2 as well. Thanks to Sean Reid who asked for this VF modification if memory serves. Also the feeling of the M8.2 leatherette is close to that of traditional vulcanite (if you like it) and the sapphire glass is reassuring for those who don't like scratched displays or screen protectors. Cons are price and the loss of 1/8000s though.

Personally, when I shoot rangefinders in general, I understand that framing accuracy is something I have to compromise.

I too am contemplating a switch up to the M9... Might have to part with my 24 Lux to fund it. (Don't know how I feel about it)

Hmm... don't know about that. I've traded-in my X1 for a s/h M8.2 body + a new Elmarit 28 ASPH and I lost very little money on the X1 being some 7 months old at the time. If I kept the X1 it would only have been gathering dust and depreciate more and more...

For me there is no contest between the M8 or M8.2. The quieter shutter, better frame-lines and sapphire glass are well worth the extra imo. And it looks a lot better too!... :)

M8.2's shutter is considerably less noisy + no worries any more about the screen, were two reasons why I never regretted switching from M8 to M8.2. The screen argument is less important because there are good screenprotectors now

But the 24 is so perfect with Full Format !! Angle and DOF, what are you doing!?

An advantage of an M8.2 may be fewer shutter actuations, as it is a newer model, but that will vary from body to body. Definitely worth using one of the free software tools to find out the shutter count from the image file meta-data.

I really like the vulcanite, the sapphire screen, and the hard silver chrome available on the M8.2, and wish it had been available as a base model on the M9.

Oh, and keep the X1. It's a great backup, and will barely generate enough resale value to buy a 28/2.8.

Eric - The argument that M8.2 will have fewer actuations is really iffy, and will greatly depend on the specific model. Although your reasoning is viable in theory, I doubt there will be much of a difference in practice.

Also, why won't the X1 generate enough resale value? I recently sold my 1-yr-old X1 for $1800, that's a good amount of the cost of the 28/2.8 wouldn't you say?

Otto - I'm still deciding. I think the 24mm will be too wide for me on FF (I don't enjoy the results with it on my MP), I'm leaning towards trading M8 + 24 Lux for M9 + 35 Cron. But either way, that decision is a few months away.

Nice to hear this, I wish the forum would show more of this sort of politeness sometimes.

Congratulations too, I think you made the right choice

Having just decided to part exchange my X1 and now looking for a M8. Should I look for a M8 or pay out the extra £5/600 for a M8.2?

Ludders

I recently decided on a re-furbished M8 with a factory garantie. More than happy so far. The extra cash saved went to get some starters lenses. Glass is worth some extra care if an extra large butget can be spent - fine - if not- there is even more care needed:rolleyes:
