Advertisement Posted April 29, 2011 Posted April 29, 2011 Hi Guest #12, Take a look here A new (?) ruse in this Forum?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Archiver Posted April 29, 2011 Share #82 Posted April 29, 2011 Maybe off topic--but why do you have to be registered to use the search function? I'm not sure, but it appears to be a common feature to many membership-based forums. But it is not necessary to register to search this forum, as the contents of the forum are available to Google, which can be used to search any site that allows it. Just type 'site:http://www.l-camera-forum.com (searchterm)' into Google, and Google will give you all the results you could want. As an example, say I want to search the whole forum for 'summicron': site:www.l-camera-forum.com summicron You can narrow the search as well by searching subforums. Just use the appropriate URL for the subforum: site:www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/ summicron This technique can be used to search any other website that can be spidered by Google. Some websites do not allow this, so this technique will not work with them. But the Leica forum does, which makes it pretty easy.
plasticman Posted May 10, 2011 Share #83 Posted May 10, 2011 One thing I'd just add to this thread, is that imo the forum is generally going the way of dpreview. I know my own tone can often be abrasive, and I'm not on the forum just to say stuff like "Lovely shot!", but I'm increasingly finding that even the slightest disagreement or the most minimal criticism of a posted image almost inevitably leads to the unleashing of a totally disproportionate personal attack. I'm finding that Jacque's post earlier in this thread rings truer and truer for every day: Fact is: internet forums tend to enable some people to be malicious. Over time you see forums where certain daily posters start to dominate discussions - many times they are indeed very knowledgeable- but many times they are also dismissive and even outright aggressive. The end result is forums slowly die an unseemly death. New users get insulted from the first post- and don't come back. Old posters accrue bitter enemies and stalwart cronies. Endless meaningless un-winnable wars ensue. Everyone else loses interest and moves on.

Never having been on DPR, I cannot comment on the behaviour there. I do know that this is infinitely preferable to RFF, which appears to be moderated at the intensely-PC, kindergarten level, even having automatic filtration software that objects to mention of that well-known digging implement known as a spade. Equally, having been here for a while, I can't say that I have noticed a particular deterioration of late; quite the contrary in fact. We are, I believe, in one of those "steady state" periods that prevails when there is nothing new coming out of Solms; it's all business as usual - a bit of bickering about sensor cleaning, endless "X vs. Y" comparison threads, anodyne comments on mediocre photos while good stuff is ignored, a film vs digital thread jogging along in some form, etc. It's not necessary to be abrasive to make a point. Equally, it would be a bloody boring place if we all agreed with each other, joined hands and sang kumbaya. I think that Bruce Bairnsfather and Ole Bill had it right: Welcome, dear visitor! wattsy Posted May 10, 2011 Share #86 Posted May 10, 2011 I do know that this is infinitely preferable to RFF, which appears to be moderated at the intensely-PC, kindergarten level, even having automatic filtration software Yes, RFF is an odd place. It ought to be more interesting than here - the members seem much less smitten by the M9, there appears to be a stronger film vibe and a greater interest in experimenting with older and cheaper gear - but it is a curiously uninvolving and somewhat humourless place. All that said, I'm more with Mani that this forum is no longer the place it was. Tone aside, the forum seems to have become home to too many for whom the Leica brand is all important. There also seems to have been a large increase in self-promoters ("my new review has just been published"), the obsessively compulsive ("Help! I think my new Summilux rattles when I look at it in a funny way") and knobheads ("I've just bought an M9 and F0.95 Noctilux but my photos are coming out too dark"). delander † Posted May 11, 2011 Share #87 Posted May 11, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) This is primarily a photo-gear forum, Leica have not released many new products recently, particularly with regard to the M-camera line. It is getting a bit boring for long term forum members because existing products have been talked to death. Personally I find the most annoying threads to be those related to improvements for Leica to include in the M10 etc. They go on forever and just come down to wishing that Leica would do what every other camera maker does. I wrote something about "Entitled" and it was translated to "Enbreastled" Are we getting better, now? I'm off to drive to Denver from Minnnesota tomorrow for my Mother's funeral. Not in a great mood. johnloumiles Posted May 14, 2011 Share #95 Posted May 14, 2011 Its great we have the whole range of posters on this thread. I'm relatively new to rangefinders but not new to photography as a whole so when I ask a question about by new M8 it comes from a place of previous knowledge. The responses I got were mostly helpful and Jaapv actually pointed me in the direction of a helpful tip in the FAQ section. Some though were condescending to the point I was confused as to the age of the poster. Regarding anyone in a derogatory term because they ask a question you deem as foolish is a reflection of your own ignorance. Show me the poster that has come on here and demanded to be spoon fed knowledge. Every question I see the person is usually humble and all they want to do is become a part of the community and start a communication with other members. Its that type of behavior of a few people that have led to the widespread elitism tag which do not fit a majority of the users. The great thing about photography is that the output communicates on so many levels and in the end its up to the picture to really speak for what we are doing here. holmes Posted May 14, 2011 Share #97 Posted May 14, 2011 Been away for a while and have not been able to keep up with the goings on. Imagine my surprise as I ran down the list of cartoons, and there they were: Willie and Joe Up Front. Their creator is Bill Mauldin. He was one of enlisted types in the Army who upset General Patton, that Patton stormed off to see 'Ike". Patton received lecture on the fact that Willie and Joe were Ike's favorites, as he Mauldin showed what it was like. Needless to say Bill Mauldin even took Willie and Joe to Vietnam. Bill's son was a warrant officer flying Hueys out of Camp Holloway. On the night of February 7th 1965, their compound came under attack along with the II Corps advisory group billets. We had over 150 casualties between the two compounds. Bill was staying in the billet his son was assigned. I had a chance to meet him later in the day, very fine gentleman. They took KIAs and WIAs as did my advisory unit. We had our share of KIA and WIA.
johnloumiles Posted May 15, 2011 Share #98 Posted May 15, 2011 I'm replying to the dozen or so posts previous to mine discussing the merits of giving a negative vibe to people asking questions or making statements that aren't deemed valid in the eyes of some. The first part of the message was stating that most members are cool and more then helpful regardless of the situation. I'm sorry I'm late on the discussion but that was my observation on the subject(s). All clear?
pico Posted May 17, 2011 Share #99 Posted May 17, 2011 So sorry. My condolences. I arrived from driving from Denver, Colorado to South-East Minnesota just an hour or so ago. Quite tired, but I can be thankful that this was the first time our whole family was together in one place for many hours to honor our Mother. It was as it should have been. As Mother willed, she was cremated and every member of the family, from ages of three to sixty-five (moi) took turns lifting a handful of her ashes into the wind at the top of Pike's Peak, Colorado, then later near a Colorado lake she enjoyed. Not sure I should post pictures. Thinking of it. I was far too emotional to be professional. Thank you for your consideration, -- Pico
dcoombs Posted May 18, 2011 Share #100 Posted May 18, 2011 Happy to have you back. These experiences are emotionally draining (I know) and will take some time to recuperate from. Save your pictures for your private moments in the future, when you can bear to re-open the event. Doug
