Wasn't someone collecting a history of

  • when a particular M8 firmware version became available; and
  • what the improvements were in that update?

Questions occasionally come up, like "When did we get SDHC capability?" or "When did Leica enable the 'discrete' mode on the shutter-updated M8's?" etc.

Mere curiosity, but might be good info for Leica to list as firmware history each time new firmware is offered, or good info for a forum FAQ.

dpreview.com is a good repository of information such as this. For example, the SDHC capability was introduced in firmware 2.00 in Sept 2008.

Yes, Andy, but that doesn't answer the question for newcomers. It's because of a misunderstanding on another thread that I mentioned the matter.

Again, the most convenient way to do that would require being able to search the forum by date instead of by topic, something I mentioned previously in response to a newcomer who felt the M9 was seeing a lot of complaints. ;)

You approached Andreas on the topic at the time, but I felt I hadn't been able to communicate what I felt would be helpful. The solution I think you recommended was to use a Google search window instead of the main forum search tool..

Back to topic: I know that at one time, someone on the forum requested from others any previous M8 firmware updates because he wanted to collect them step by step; for what reason, he didn't say.

And I understand that you're saying to me: "Do your own research, don't ask us to do it." But I'm asking for someone (http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/175450-few-m8-questions.html#post1668563) who doesn't realize the information is available to inform his judgments. :p

...might be good info for Leica to list as firmware history each time new firmware is offered, or good info for a forum FAQ.

Excerpts of dpreview.com:

Leica M8 firmware 1.110:

- 6 Bit lens codes for Summarit-M lenses 35, 50, 75 and 90 mm.

- Time shortened between pre-flash and main flash in M-TTL mode with flashes LEICA SF24 D and SCA compatible flashguns.

- Function of the central setting wheel on the camera back improved (unintentional scrolling of the menu now prevented).

- Battery capacity display improved.

- Change in the French menu: «Marche +UV/IR» instead «Marche avec».

Leica M8 firmware 2.000:

- Compatibility to memory cards in the SDHC standard up to 32GB capacity.

- New function “AUTO-ISO” with setting options for maximum ISO values and the slowest shutter speed.

Leica M8 and M8.2 firmware 2.005:

- Fixes the 'Shutter Fault' error that can occur when shooting multiple images.

And, from David Farkas, version 2.004 (see first post).

The search function indeed works, but one has to know an issue exists to begin the search. In the other thread Howard referenced above, for instance, I hadn't known that Leica issued an M8 firmware update for the discreet shutter function. Didn't even know it was possible, and Leica specifically states on their site (even today) that the M8 has no such function. In this case, one would have had to know to search "M8 firmware updates" to reveal the truth. Once known, the search is easy (as shown in my link above).

So, Howard is right that a list of firmware updates would answer questions that people didn't even know to ask. Personally, I think that should be Leica's role, but apparently they are too busy making good stuff to edit web sites.:)

Howard,

I recall that thread and iirc it was Wilson Laidlaw (wlaidlaw) or who asked for it. (But it equally might have been Carsten Whimster.)

As it happens I still have a complete set of the updates: 1.090, 1.091, 1.092, 1.102, 1.07, 1.110, 1.201, 2.000, 2.002, 2.004, and the current 2.005. Alas I never downloaded all of the pdf's that described the changes. (Actually iirc there were some updates whose changes were never described and owners were left to stare in wonderment at their M8 when something unexpected occurred so I may have the full set - I don't know.:o) I have the pdfs for 1.092, 1.102 and 1.107.

Pete.

Precisely my point, Jeff; and I meant no disrespect to you. Your question is obvious and on point, IF one isn't aware of what ISN'T mentioned in the Leica page you cited.

Pete, I think you're right. Some of the first updates were just tweakies where we had to figure out whether they made a difference. :)

It may indeed be Wilson who made the request; I remember only that it was someone with respect in the community who did so.

Thanks to everyone with input to this question.

Seems to me that future generations may want to know when which feature was improved on the M8. But I admit, I may be wrong about that. :p

At any rate, we've had solid input and good suggestions.

Perhaps this will be of interest to historians of the first digital M's. Looking back, we've already come a long way, haven't we? And remember how thrilled we were when we first got our M8's, not knowing how much functionality would later be added?

Either we're true suckers, or Leica is worth what we pay for!

(btw--I think it's the latter ;) )
