Want-a-leica Posted April 7, 2011 Share #3 Posted April 7, 2011 Hi Folks Here are a few M8 queries which im sure you will be able to answer 1. M8 ... Price when new 2. M8.2 Price when new 3. M8 to M8.2 upgrade cost 4.What the full upgrade entailed .. eg softer shutter. crystal lcd. service 5.What does the orange sticker on a body signify ... is it just back from a service? Oh sorry to fussy but costs in Sterling GBP would help Many Thanks.....Brian Regarding point 1: By "new", do you mean now or when it was launched? AFAIK they stopped making new ones some time back. A bit of googling suggests that the launch price was 4,500 USD (i.e. at current rates around 2,800 GBP). Recently I saw one which looked for all intents and purposes "new" (boxed, with everything you could imagine). It was in a store in Japan and was going for something like 500,000 yen. About 3.600 GBP at current rates. There's also one for sale in a local store here with a 35mm lens (Summicron, I think). Total of 777,000 yen, or around 5,600 GBP. Looks basically untouched. So it seems to vary from place to place.
!Nomad64 Posted April 7, 2011 Share #4 Posted April 7, 2011 1 - The M8 sold for € 4,450 here in Italy 2 - The M8.2 sold for € 4,995, always here in Italy 3 & 4 - Check for yourself on the official Leica page at Leica Camera AG - Service - M8 Upgrade 5 - If I'm not wrong the orange sticker reports some quick essential users instructions and is usually found on new bodies or used bodies from particularly attentive owners 6 - You'll want to convert amounts into GBP through any available online currency converter. I use these ones, but there are many more available: XE - Universal Currency Converter and Currency Converter | OANDA Hope this helps Bruno
farnz Posted April 8, 2011 Share #5 Posted April 8, 2011 Hi Folks Here are a few M8 queries which im sure you will be able to answer 1. M8 ... Price when new 2. M8.2 Price when new 3. M8 to M8.2 upgrade cost 4.What the full upgrade entailed .. eg softer shutter. crystal lcd. service 5.What does the orange sticker on a body signify ... is it just back from a service? Brian, 1. M8 new price was £2,990 inc VAT 2. M8.2 new price was £3,990 inc VAT 3. Upgrade price: £1,100 inc VAT without the vulcanite 4. New quieter shutter with top speed of 1/4000th, frame lines set to 2 metres, sapphire screen, vulcanite covering. The upgrade came with a further year's warranty and included a full clean, lubricate and adjustment service. (My viewfinder was slightly off horizontally at infinity and came back perfect.) 5. Just a couple of obvious warnings that I can't recall anymore: don't use as a hammer, don't swallow etc. Note that there are still subtle differences between an upgraded M8 and an M8.2: eg, no "Snapshot" mode, exposure compensation not adjustable with the thumbwheel, black chrome not black paint. Plus discreet shutter mode (not included with M8 shutter upgrade) and a black dot. Jeff
Jeff S Posted April 9, 2011 Share #7 Posted April 9, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) and a black dot. Too late to edit post...should have clarified that black dot is only on the black M8.2; the chrome version has a red dot. Jeff
farnz Posted April 9, 2011 Share #8 Posted April 9, 2011 Plus discreet shutter mode (not included with M8 shutter upgrade) and a black dot. Jeff, If you're referring to delaying re-cocking of the shutter until you take your finger off the shutter release then that was provided through a firmware update and works just fine on my upgraded M8. Pete.
bpalme Posted April 9, 2011 Share #9 Posted April 9, 2011 My previous owner spent $1250 to bring an M8 to M8.u. Vulcanite and quiet shutter... I think that's all for the 8.u.

Pete. Thanks, Pete. Didn't know that. Leica should update their web page, which specifically states that this is not part of the upgrade (no mention here of a firmware update). bpalme Posted April 9, 2011 Share #12 Posted April 9, 2011 No, see web page above. LCD and frame lines are other possibilities. Jeff I know I'm just saying that's what it cost just for Shutter and vulcanite.. or that 's what he paid anyway.. I've never seen a straight M8 so I can't tell if the framelines have been upgraded or not.
ho_co Posted April 9, 2011 Share #13 Posted April 9, 2011 ... Leica should update their M8 Upgrade web page, which specifically states that this is not part of the upgrade (no mention here of a firmware update). Jeff-- You're right, that web page is quite out of date. The firmware came after the introduction of the upgrade program. FWIW, all M8's with "quiet shutter" gained the feature when and only when the camera received a particular firmware update. The description of the discrete shutter setting was included with that firmware and is in the M8.2 instructions. Later firmware updates also support the 'discrete' function on cameras with "quiet shutter." It might be helpful if Leica were to publish with its firmware update instructions a firmware history, establishing what features became available with which firmware update. I think some people on the forum have collected those data.
