M6 or MP?

M3 are getting age related problems, repairable but expensive.

M6 is a nice camera and you should be happy. It is missing a little of the panache of the early M cameras, but you should be pleased none the less. I have two from early production M6s that I use mostly while the early M cameras sit.

A new MP is simply not worth the extra money, but do take knowledgeable person to inspect the purchase if you can. Much like having your own mechanic look over a used car before you buy it.

A nice M6 will be 1/3 the money of a MP and provide 95% of the satisfaction.

Hi

If you can try before you buy.

If you cant get a M3, even a rebuild will be cheaper then the cost difference of a MP, a M6 is just a heap of corroding zinc.and flaring finder.

I own both.

The M6 is certainly a satisfying camera to use. If you have an M9 and are looking for a secondary camera to occassionaly experience film shooting, you might consider the M6TTL as the shutter speed dial is more similar to the M9.

While the MP looks very close to the M6 on paper, in the hand it is a subtly different experience. It is heavier and has a feel of precision machinery that isn't quite there to the same degree with the M6. It is a jewel of a camera.

From a practical standpoint, though, the only real advantags of the MP over the M6 are the improved rangefinder patch and the three-LED meter display.

But it's the 5% that makes all the difference...

If you get the Leica M film bug, eventually you will just have to have an MP. Just "because".

Ah, but then there is the M7 - the perfect film-accompaniment for an M9! TTL, AV-mode, controls same location, same orientation etc etc. Aesthetically it might be considered that an MP has the edge, but as a photographic tool to be used alongside an M9, it just has to be the M7.

You will of course draw the conclusion that I have an M9 and M7. Prejudiced? Moi? Never! ;)

I like the idea of an M3, but am scared to go meterless!

Don't be scared.

Buy an M2 - just gorgeous - and you'll be very surprised at how accurately you can guess exposures, or more precisely you'll be surprised at how forgiving film is. I've put several rolls through my "new" M2 now and every frame has been printable. All guessed exposures.

If you are reluctant to swim without a buoyancy aid then download a light meter app - like this free one - and you'll always have it in your pocket for backup.

I simply can not quarrel with someone who wants to own a Picasso.

My tastes are simple and I just get a starving artist painting on home shopping network. My like minded guests do not know the difference.

When i put the M6 pic on the wall, NOBODY says that would have been better if you used a MP.

+1 if you can't take a decent photo with an M6 having an MP isn't going to make you a better photographer. I find the whole issue of people banging on about how the MP is superior quite dull. Of course it's a beautiful piece of equipment and it's priced accordingly but my M6 feels pretty solid to me and it hasn't let me down. So what if the MP has a non-flaring viewfinder? I've never noticed any 'flare' in my viewfinder. Honestly if I had the budget I'd rather get an extra Summilux than upgrade to an MP, it would have more impact on my photography.

Dear Led Zep fan,

Many good words from my forum colleagues which I agree with. I would agree an M2 is an MP without a meter. One can be added if you don't want to "go commando" (I like that). The question would be what film to you expect to use? If you want to use slide film then you only really have 0.5 stop either way on the correct exposure any more and you'll lose highlights or shadow depending which way you go. If you use B&W negative then bracketing and the sunny f16 rule should be OK. I've given up on colour neg film in favour of slide film, Velvia 100DL , Astia 100, or Provia 100, or 400X. There is perhaps one new Kodak print film with fine grain or Porta for wedding shoots.

So for colour slide film I'd need a meter, the M6 can be battery hungry (for a mechanical camera), my M6TTL did get through batteries quicker than expected while the MP and M7 seem to be much longer lived. Although I still make sure I have a spare 1 or 2 (M7) in my bag.

M7 and M6TTL should be easier to find used than MP. You won't find many Black Paint MP used but chrome MP are around sometimes. A chrome MP should look like new after 40 years of careful ownership, not so sure on the BP ones. For an M7 I do prefer the Black Chrome ones, probably same for M6TTL, so it depends what lenses you have and if you want to match the lens and body. For a BP MP you'll of course need to have BP lenses as the black chrome lenses don't quite match. (That'll stir things up in this forum no doubt). It's a bit like those cars you see with sun bleached bonnet paintwork that doesn't quite match the glossy sides!

To be a real backup for an M9 you'd probably need a motor wind on the M7 using AE? For a classic feel go for the chrome MP or M2 both smooth and quiet.

Touch before you buy. If unsure go for the cheaper older Ms as you will end up with an MP one day but might not want to commit the 2x cost of MP over M6.

Best of luck, Lincoln

A good M6 is a good M6, but a good MP is for life.

or, to put it another way

An M6 will satisfy your mind, an MP will satisfy your soul.

Regards,

Bill

I've seen wonderful images created with an M6 when in the hands of great artists. Someone should remind them they need an MP because the camera will enhance ones personal vision. Give me a break!
