Hi all

I found a leica m8 thathas been recently returned from leica for refurbishing, it has a max speed of 1/4000th of a sec and the flash for shutter sync is in a different place too ( 1/160th?)

Does this mean that is a M8U?the m8 that has been upgraded to m8.2 spec? it also has a 1 year warranty and all the gear too

The reason i wanted to check was the dealer says it was returned to them in a m8.2 box instead of the old m8 one

thanks very much

As Dave said, there were three upgrades possible.

One was the slower shutter, which this one has.

A second was the sapphire glass over the rear LCD. The sapphire glass feels a little different than the plastic screen. It generally feels a little cooler, since it conducts heat better; and if you thunk it with the tip of your fingernail, it feels harder. (Or maybe that's just my generosity, but I think you'll be able to tell that pretty easily.)

A third was the finder frames. For that you'd have to shoot some pictures carefully at closest focus distance and see whether you get everything in the picture that you saw in the finder frame. The upgraded frames were adjusted for a 2 m distance, so they should be tighter at closest distance: That is, with the upgraded frames at closest distance, the image would show less than the frames indicate.

You might want to call Leica, give them the serial number, and ask what updates the camera had.

They are awaiting confirmation on whether the original owner received the UV/IR filters or not and activated Lightroom

So Monday I'll be ordering it , now I need to find a good lens for it , the cron 50 they have is from 1956 , so I said no thanks. I may look atthe new summarits too

cheers

Due163,

The M8 shipped with Capture One software, not Lightroom.

Pete.

also, if the software has been activated by first owner you can't activate it yourself

better off buying lightroom anyway ....

Depending on the price and status of the 1956 Cron, it might be a nice deal and a god lens.

The date on the lens doesn't necessarily rule it out as a bad lens.

Old Leica glass can be very, very nice (especially in the bang for the buck department, compared to a new 50 Summarit, which can be double or even triple of the cost).

The M8.u looks nice!

The favorite lens of Henri Cartier-Bresson cannot be that bad i guess. ;)

I do not know about pricing the Cron.

I use Mac computers and mainly Lightroom for everything, it can do well.

It is a superior software in regards of very quick, fluent operation of edit, archive, store, retouch with keyboard shortcuts and minimal mouse usage.

I bought Aperture, when it was introduced at discount price (there is a catch in the fine print about this btw) and use Aperture just for it's better slideshow engine (works the same as iMovie, just a tad deeper).

I am a Lightroom guy through and through, since I still used Windows computer (identical UI between Windows and Mac version + similar performance as I recall).

Lightroom is great, as it even is compatible regarding it's library between Windows and Mac !

How great is that?

Lightroom also runs quicker on slower Macs than Aperture, when working in 1:1 view in the dev module - Aperture just seems, to be a bit stuck.

Lightroom also is quite optimized regarding file bloat - it's install is a mere 80MB (yes, that would be megabyte - you guys still know this thing?).

It's only files, to keep on the hard drive is the small application install (something around 170MB ), it's library and your pictures.

You are fine, to delete the cache files and preview files anytime, you run out of space.

Aperture handles files a bit differently - not so practical, when you are on a notebook or otherwise limited in space.

Anyway - get a pricing idea on the Cron, make sure about it's condition (you might want to resell it later, so don't buy a lemon).

Old lenses from Leica are fine, when in good condition.

Interestingly, I had a longer talk with a known Japanese photographer a few days ago during a gallery opening. Around his neck: a pretty worn M4-P and … you guess it … a very early Leica 35 3.5 LTM (aperture dial in front - something pre Summaron therefore) lens - he says, he prefers it - his photographs, shown in the gallery, printed as big as 85cm didn't show any lack of technical equipment ;-)

Well i dropped the credit card on the purchase

I got the m8 , 2 free UV/IR filters and a full copy of adobe lightroom ( leica told them that lightroom was a digilux 2 item, but the store gave me a copy) all shipped next day with taxes included for 2400 bucks , a good deal i think

then after I get an email confirming its arrival at the post office I getthis gem of an email from leica USA

"Yes it had the shutter sapphire glass and mask in 2008. Thank you

I also passed on the old summicron and found a rigid one with a recent CLA and a slight cleaning mark for 370 bucks , outside looks a little rough, but the optics look awesome

this was quite a good day!

That indeed is a great deal!

Take your time with learning lightroom - the learning curve is steep, as it has some concepts of function, that are just enough different from the general Windows/ Mac way of working, to confuse in the beginning (my biggest issue in the beginning was, to grasp it's concept of tagging files for batch delete instead of just deleting ;-) ).

Make sure, you watch the excellent tutorial videos on the Adobe site, when you dig deeper (especially the very complex sharpening module needs study - it's a very important part of developing and - also - works a bit different than what might be known to you).

So now you need to find another lens, to fit that second filter, I suppose ;-) … just kidding, take your time, it's a great camera, to use!
