I've added a new gallery to my website:

Honduras - Tina Manley

They are all photos of families in Honduras. All made with Leicas. All of the B&W with film. These are just small, unretouched jpegs. I'm in the process of scanning the film again and will upload larger files as I finish. Every time I learn something new about scanning, I have to rescan all of the photos that are now not as good as they could be!!

Thanks, Pete and Mauro! I appreciate your comments. I was hoping for more comments and /or constructive criticisms. Maybe the other 189 viewers so far had no opinion? It's film, it's Leica. No more comments?

TIA

Do you really need our comments?! What could be said for a bunch of pictures way above the standard we are accustomed to see in such forums! Like a new chapter from Magnum Photos. A bit of Salgado, a touch of Koudelka but definitely 90% of your own signature. We need such photographs to remember what film Leicas are for as well as what can be done with film, hard to duplicate with any digital gear or process.

In our day while the majority of the picture-takers were paying more for the technicals and convenience rather than minding about developing talents and caring for expression and aesthetics, your photographs seemed rather a fresh breeze to remind us that the standards defining visual quality have not changed a bit. I am also sure that any camera can sing in your hands.

May light be with you...

I think this is the best of your work I have seen (I used to be on LUG and on MUG). All I can say I wish I could get close. Many thanks for posting. It would be great to meet you.

Thanks, Bob. Of course I need your comments. Everybody needs encouragement and constructive criticism. I appreciate any comments I can get! Photography is a lonely profession. Thank goodness for forums!

Its difficult to be constructively critical of such images. Obviously there are preferred ones and some that may be weaker than others but as a body they are both evocative and inspiring (those are the closest words that I can use). I particularly like the back-lit dusty/smokey interiors and the shot of the meal being eaten whilst the cat watches - a very ordinary scene in what is to me an extraordinary context.

A great appreciation of life for these people, well worth the effort, you have captured the feeling with an empathetic eye. The B&W shots are very nice, but I am particularly taken with the colour shots, especially the wonderful tones in 232 to 234, your work with the lens there is special. What film were you using?

Thanks again.

tina, can I offer a small critique?

I dont doubt you're great photographer. But I think I'd like see 20 pictures instead of 500 pictures. I know it is hard to select but it allows me see your personal style. It is that small thing I thought about. Though it appears as a huge task to pick best 20 pictures then the quality level increases much.

i wish u good luck with photography

cheers

Thanks, Tomasis. I have a very difficult time editing and need all of the help I can get! I know all of these people and their stories and that gets in the way of being objective about editing. I got Eugene Richards and Maggie Steber to edit for me. The B&W ones are their A (the first 139) & B (the next 67) picks, narrowed down from about 5000 photos. And that's not even all because I did a rough edit before they made their choices. To edit down from the ones on the web site, I'm going to need more help! Suggestions?

Thank you, Colin! The color ones were all made with my M8s that I dropped in the river on that same trip. They are still working fine.

I think editing is one of the most difficult tasks we face, it feels like throwing away friends or children. I've always found that the first cull is very easy, subsequent ones much more difficult.
