75 apo VS 90 apo

I suspect that when the 50 1.4 Asph was introduced in 2004 that the M8 was still fresh on the drawing board. It did replace a lens that had been unchanged glass-wise for close to 40 years. The new apsheric lenses do bring positives to the drawing board.

I agree. The previous 50mm f/1.4 was old and the performance of more modern lenses only served to highlight its deficiencies.

My point is that Leica is a very small company which was clearly suffering from financial constraints and what spare effort and money it had available went into a lens that in my opinion is quite superb – but – does little to support the launch of the M8.

The one explanation I have had from a Leica manager is interesting, if a bit convoluted. It starts not with the f/1.4 but the f/2 Summicron, which is also starting to show its age in comparison with the newer ASPH Summicron lenses. The reported story is that Leica have had various attempts to improve the 50mm f/2 – there is strong documentary evidence of this – but found it very difficult to obtain the desired improvement without increasing the cost to the point where it would be virtually the same as a new f/1.4. Unless the f/2 was something very special indeed, which was unlikely, it was not a commercial proposition. Customers faced with the same cost and no discernable difference in performance would invariably opt for the f/1.4. So the result, according to this story, is that there was a new f/1.4 and the f/2 was abandoned to its fate. My informant said that Leica had at that time given virtually no thought to lenses to support an M8 launch – we now seem to be seeing the result of that set of circumstances and those decisions.

OK - last question before I order one of these puppies.....

Does any one have a shot of the 75 Lux, 75 apo and 90 apo next to each other, and/or mounted on an M8?

Need to order in the next day or so for a trip coming up.... and can only get one before I go.

Edit: Oops never mind - I think there is what I am looking for on EPutts site - just didn't remember this shot from before).....

The 50 1.4 ASPH on the M8 is more than fantastic for portraits...

Yes is it... here you see Leo. M8 and 1,4 50mm at full aperture.

so- which will it be Dave?

Still really torn between the 75 & 90 cron. I am looking to go with a 3 lens solution. I have my 28/2.8 mounted most of the time, and carry the c/v 15 also. So on the longer end I am wondering whether to match the 15/28 with a 75 or 90. 75 seems a better spacing, but I historically liked longer focal lengths on SLRs :(

Hmmmm..... it's not a case of buying both either. I really only have space to take one...

Guy & I played around awhile yesterday with the 90 APO, 90 2.8, 75 Lux, & 75 Cron.

I'm not really sure that Leica has any bad performers in their line-up at all.

I ended up taking the extra 90 2.8 off his hands, so will probably be selling off the like new 75 cron that Leica just coded for me.

What was really surprising is that the 90 2.8 stacked up very well to the 90 APO with the exception being it does not have 2.0 for max aperature. I really loved how it rendered. It was slightly warmer and in our shooting almost seemed to provide a little more 3D/Texture to the shots. The 90 APO "may" have been slightly sharper but not something that jumped out at you. In respect to focusing, it seemed easier to nail the focus on the 2.8 Elmarit.

The 75 Cron that is going to be put up for sale is an absolutely excellent performer also. My issue is that the 90mm actual focal length (75 now 100 on the M8) is one that I have never gravitated to. The 90 now being a 120 gives me an extra option on the M8 that I like.

Best,

Ray

Yes Ray and I pretty much agreed on the 90 mm that Elmarit is a sweetheart of a lens and if the speed is not needed than the Elamarit is really nice. The Yosemite series I used the Elmarit but the (0 apo is really going to be very useful for me and the 75 lux will compliment it very nicely when I want that look. Pretty safe to say there are no ugly dogs here , the all performed very well

All 90 apo shots , there really almost identical the 75 focuses closer and maybe a little smoother to focus. Maybe the 75 cron is a touch sharper at F2 and i mean a touch

I bet the folks at Leica are loving this thread. Every entry looks like dollar signs on their eyeballs.

Guy, you are completely out of control. You're going to have to hire a sherpa to haul your M gear around for you. I think I'll buy a few shares of Leica stock.
