SiOnara Posted March 2, 2011 Share #1 Posted March 2, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi there. I am guessing this is the dreaded shutter reloading problem. It only seems to happen to my M8 when it gets a bit cold but it's been getting worse over the past few weeks. Today the temperature was about 6 degrees C so not that cold. I bought my camera new about 12 months ago so i hopefully will be able to get it fixed FOC. Please let me know your thoughts and advice. Jei

jaapv Posted March 2, 2011 Share #2 Posted March 2, 2011 Normally it is a fast and simple repair for Leica.
SiOnara Posted March 2, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted March 2, 2011 So it's definitely time to send it in. I will miss it! Do they know what causes the problem?
marknorton Posted March 2, 2011 Share #4 Posted March 2, 2011 The shutter cocking action has two things to do; first, it cocks the shutter itself which requires it to move a lever sideways with surprisingly large force acting against the release springs in the shutter. Second, and this is where your camera is failing, it has to prime the release mechanism. This involves move the release lever until it is held in place by a permanent magnet. To release the shutter, a current is passed through the coil in the pictures which counteracts the permanent magnet and lets the release lever go which then releases the shutter. There's a sensor to tell the camera if the release lever has been successfully primed at the end of the cocking cycle. If not, the camera retries repeatedly for a few seconds until it gives up and displays an error message. The magnetic latching depends on the retaining force of the magnet being greater than the force of the springs acting against it and if there is debris on the magnetic pole pieces, that will prevent the magnet from holding. SiOnara Posted March 2, 2011 Author Share #5 Posted March 2, 2011 Ha, looks like my 1 year passport ran out on the 14/2/2011!!!
Nicoleica Posted March 2, 2011 Share #6 Posted March 2, 2011 This should be covered under the standard warranty.
SiOnara Posted March 2, 2011 Author Share #7 Posted March 2, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I hope so. How long is the standard warranty in the UK? 2 years?
Nicoleica Posted March 2, 2011 Share #8 Posted March 2, 2011 I believe that that is the international warranty standard. It should be detailed on your guarantee card.
SiOnara Posted March 2, 2011 Author Share #9 Posted March 2, 2011 Looks like that is a 2 year warranty. I will contact me dealer tomorrow. Thanks for your help
jaapv Posted March 3, 2011 Share #10 Posted March 3, 2011 Actually Leica fixed a similar problem on my old M8 (out of guaranty) for free.
okram Posted March 3, 2011 Share #11 Posted March 3, 2011 I have sent it twice for this. Tap it from under at the right end to stop the recocking (at least it worked for me). They will probably offer to "clean the magnets", it didnt work for me, so I suggest to insist on exchanging the whole cocking mechanism. M

SiOnara Posted May 11, 2011 Author Share #14 Posted May 11, 2011 I finally received my M8 back from Solms today. They repaired the shutter and winding mechanism, changed the LDC display (coffee ring) and adjusted and serviced the entire camera. All done under guarantee. I also had a lone camera from them over the past month as I use my M8 as my main source of income. Really helpful staff at the London office and overall a fast repair. efix Posted May 12, 2011 Share #15 Posted May 12, 2011 Megadust -- good to hear it worked out in favour for you. I'm experiencing the same problem in low temperatures (below zero °C) -- it might also have to do with relative humidity, not sure. Anyway, happen this winter, and I worked around by removing the battery. Afterwards, the M8 would continue to work properly again for a while, until at some point the problem reappeared. Not the most elegant solution, but as long as I don't NEED to send it in, I won't.
SiOnara Posted May 15, 2011 Author Share #16 Posted May 15, 2011 Will be interesting to see how the camera performs in the cold weather again. Hopefully everything will be smooth.
Dominum Posted May 16, 2011 Share #17 Posted May 16, 2011 Just an update, got back my camera from Leica, they repaired the shutter and winder for free! Even though it was out of warranty. Thumbs up!
johnalex141r Posted May 19, 2011 Share #18 Posted May 19, 2011 Just an update, got back my camera from Leica, they repaired the shutter and winder for free! Even though it was out of warranty. Thumbs up! Lucky you; I had to pay for mine. When I got it it originally it would do that re-cocking when not really cold (-15 or so, IIRC) so in the winter I just tended to use film cameras. Then, it started doing it above the freezing point; it was time to send it in. I'll have to admit that since I got it repaired, we had a winter, but in retrospect I did not even take the M8 out of its case; I feel quite silly that my main camera is an Olympus 35-rc that was given to me! (the Olympus "just works" so long as there is film in it) I think it's time to get the M8 out; thanks for the unintended kick start. JohnS.
jgbossert Posted June 26, 2012 Share #19 Posted June 26, 2012 Had the same problem. After the camera was not in use for a year the second curtain stopped opening after a handful shots. Same as documented in the video above. Our local Leica Store sent the camera to Solms last week. The camera is already out of warrenty. Currently I wait for the quotation. WestMichigan Posted June 26, 2012 Share #20 Posted June 26, 2012 Bummer Johann, Guess that's a perverse warning to me to shoot as often as possible to not have that problem. Hope your repair isn't to frightfully expensive Richard in Michigan
