colonel Posted March 1, 2011 Author Share #21 Posted March 1, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) all very interesting size doesn't matter () to me as long as it doesn't block the viewfinder too much I thought the v3 was ok in this respect, unless you tell me its a serious issue. The sample photos I have seen with it are amazing. Basically the new Leica 28mm f2.8 ASPH is 1,299 (GBP) and the v3 I can probably get for around 600-699. The v3's centre seems as good as I can use. Not seen any corner pictures but I will be shooting at f2.8, so I would like the edges to be sharp for off centre subjects, but don't need the extreme corners to be sharp. I am shooting digital (M8) mostly. Although am hanking after a M6 to burn through some Ilford. Probably have to wait for a bit as I need to pay the builder this week ...... As Jaap says, the lens in question is a v. 3 (NOT v.4!) 28 Elmarit. As described in my old post here: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/customer-forum/45854-praise-mandler-lenses.html The v.3 is by NO means "far from being as sharp as the asph at full aperture..." Less contrast, perhaps, and a different kind of fuzziness at the edges. But the resolution is high over a lot of the frame. It is my favorite of all the Elmarit 28s as regards imaging characteristics. Its main drawback is that it is also the largest (having been designed for use with an external finder before the 28 lines became "built-in") and thus blocks the finder more than the later 28 designs. Colonel, Leica has made Elmarit 28mm lenses for about 46 years, in 5 fairly different versions. The same is true for most of their other lenses - do not assume the same name means the same lens ("Elmarit" simply designates an f/2.8 lens) because they are redesigned about once a decade (with a few exceptions). Advertisement Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 Hi colonel, Take a look here LEITZ ELMARIT-M 28mm. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Xmas Posted March 2, 2011 Share #22 Posted March 2, 2011 Hi It might block the finder with a hood fitted I'd not have detected as I use both eyes and an external finder. The difference between the III and the asph is in the corners at f2.8 and the size, Id try both on the camera, if you spend your time looking at the corners you might detect a difference. jaapv Posted March 2, 2011 Share #23 Posted March 2, 2011 Heavystar sells a VERY NICE screw-in metal hood for the V.iii which has considerable less viewfinder intrusion.
rickp13 Posted March 2, 2011 Share #24 Posted March 2, 2011 for jaap, did you choose the vented one, or the solid one with cap? i like lens shades with matching or available cap when possible (just an added bit of convenience). greetings from hamburg rick

rickp13 Posted March 3, 2011 Share #27 Posted March 3, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) wda fyi, 6-bit coding for the 28 elmarit is possible starting with model 11804 (version 3), production start 1979. if you need it, the factory list of codable lenses is here: Leica Camera AG - Downloads my 11804 was coded - works fine. cheers rick

Last time i used it must be 2 decades ago and i preferred the Minolta 28mm M-Rokkor then. Oh my. The 28mm M-Rokkor might be in a league of its own almost. It was designed by the gnomes for almost sure (like the Summicron-C/40mm M Rokkor). Three and a half decades gone by now . . . ———- My M-Rokkor now has the haziness-infection. Must have had a severe cold. [Freezing weather. then the moist will condensate in the lens when you go inside. Next is oxidation of e.g. alumina products, that then infect the lens coating.or something like that, as the master Will told me. ] So I am looking to replace this very dear lens. @lct - . I would have thought that the v-3 would be most nearest fit of signature. Maybe some thoughts?
lct Posted March 27, 2024 Share #31 Posted March 27, 2024 (edited) It's been 13 years already. Since then i found a 6-bit coded Rokkor 28/2.8 that has no schneideritis spots so i did not look for anything else pre-asph sorry. My latest asph is the Ultron 28/2 which has a modern signature with too much contrast for my taste but it is almost as compact as the Rokkor.
