epand56 Posted June 25, 2011 Share #62 Â Posted June 25, 2011 I've sold the handgrip and bought the thumb up. No regrets.
AbbeyFoto Posted June 25, 2011 Share #63 Â Posted June 25, 2011 Hello all. 1st post.Thinking seriously about an M9. Is it generally recommended to use some kind of grip to make the camera easier to hold? And if so, what's the difference between the hand grip and the thumb thing? And there seem to also be various models of each of these. Recommendations and advice appreciated... Â I am left eyed and wear glasses. Glasses became an issue for some wides so I got a diopter corrector for the finder. Trouble is this means my face is pushed closer to the body of the camera and the thumbs started to push into the right side of my face. I decided to abandon it for this configuration. I then bought a S/H grip and this has become a permanent add on. The grip adds to the physical dimension of the kit but for me it is overall a positive addition. Â My point? There are many personal variables in determining our experiences of a camera and there are no universal recommendations.

dickp Posted July 17, 2011 Share #65 Â Posted July 17, 2011 So how do I go about getting a "Thumbie" from Steve Barnett? How much are they, and are they available in silver?
algrove Posted July 17, 2011 Share #66 Â Posted July 17, 2011 I use and like the the Thumbs up double (one for bubble level and the other for wide angle view finder. I also use the Really Right Stuff hand grip/mount base since I prefer its longer mounting ability for tripod use for landscape photography versus the Leica hand grip which I have recently stopped using. nggalai Posted July 19, 2011 Share #68  Posted July 19, 2011 As my M9 has looked much like the attached image for some time now …  … I too contacted Steve and eagerly await a Thumbie now. I’m sure most people can hold an M9 with no problems as-is, but I’m used to, well, using the lever of my M3. Also, arthritis isn’t relegated to Our Elders only, so I really think Leica should consider endorsing the Thumbie, Thumbs-Up et al more aggressively. I have friends who scorn The M simply because of missing molding and finger support.  At any rate: Thanks to LUF! Without this forum, I’d never have learned of the Thumbie.  Cheers, -Sascha Welcome, dear visitor! erl Posted July 19, 2011 Share #69 Â Posted July 19, 2011 Sascha, I totally endorse your observations and can tell you that for some time my M8 and M9 had velcro stuck to them for thumb support. Works fine. However, I invested in the Thumbie and the improvement is considerable, both ergonomically and aesthetically. You will be impressed when yous arrives. Dougg Posted July 20, 2011 Share #70 Â Posted July 20, 2011 I like the Thumbie on my M9, and I like the Leica grip too which is on the M8. The Thumbie is certainly more compact, yet the grip gives a very solid hold. Not sure which I prefer at this point.
rafael_macia Posted July 20, 2011 Share #71  Posted July 20, 2011 Thumbs up I believe is necessary its that good I dipped the grip part in several layer of liquid rubber for better traction and feel  love it  only comes off when I'm using a Visoflex  I use a Leica grip with my Visoflex. Are you saying it needs to be removed for Visoflex use ?
nggalai Posted July 21, 2011 Share #72  Posted July 21, 2011 All hail the Steve!  There, I fixed it. by nggalai, on Flickr  Arrived today – UK to Switzerland in three days? Not bad at all. And as mentioned on flickr, I carried the cam for two hours straight without any issues whatsoever. Two hours without either my makeshift thumb grip or the Thumbie, and I couldn’t type this now.  Thanks, dude.
flyalf Posted February 15, 2012 Share #73  Posted February 15, 2012 Just some experiences after using the Thumbie for some months. I really like this for better grip, and this is currently my only pimping of M9 .  I was a bit worried if this would really stick, but my worries are laid to rest. Also its quite easy to remove if one wants, and to re-attach. My only small issue is that the outer black (varnish?) surface is slowly disappearing because of wear and tear, but Im ok with the brass look.  Recommended  http://stevesblogofeverything.blogspot.com/2010/10/leica-m8-and-m9-thumb-grip.html. jaapv Posted February 15, 2012 Share #74 Â Posted February 15, 2012 I use a Leica grip with my Visoflex. Are you saying it needs to be removed for Visoflex use ? No - the Visoflex III does not turn when mounting.
tdtaylor Posted February 15, 2012 Share #75 Â Posted February 15, 2012 My only small issue is that the outer black (varnish?) surface is slowly disappearing because of wear and tear, but Im ok with the brass look. Â Mine has acquired an exposed brass edge around its perimeter, but has for the most part protected the camera itself. Didn't take long, but looks fine-just used. May appeal to some, but not others. YMMV

jrovner Posted February 16, 2012 Share #78 Â Posted February 16, 2012 I have both the Leica hand grip and a Thumbs Up, and, oddly, my use of them depends on the strap I'm using. Â When I use a wrist strap, I use only the hand grip. When I'm not shooting, my shooting hand is at my side, with my fingertips curled around the hand grip. That way, the camera is dangling a bit, but I'm not relying on the single camera lug to bear the weight of the camera, and I'm also not feeling much weight. The camera is also in a convenient position to take a quick shot. And since I'm using the other hand to focus, I don't need the additional steadying support that the Thumbs Up would offer. Â When I'm using a neck strap, I use the hand grip AND the Thumbs Up. That's because without something around my wrist to aid in hoisting the camera, the Thumbs Up adds the necessary leverage.
