Could only be a "successor" to the M9 according to Leica.

How could a mirrorless be a successor to a rangefinder?

Like a full frame X100 with true RF and interchangeable lenses no?

Please. That's NOT what it says. It says:

'Of course, we won't stop with the M9, but it is definitely too early to discuss a successor to this model.'

- that means that it is too early to discuss any replacement for the M9, not that the successor will be mirrorless.

Regards,

Bill

I may have missed someone else saying this, but since when is a rangefinder a 'mirrorless' camera?

They either are losing their minds or 'pulling our chain' - and if any of the 'mirrorless rumors, or R solution comments, including this latest 'mirrorless' one from them are to be relied upon, as they have said again and again and again, we all better just forget they say anything until they actually PRODUCE something and show it.

A rangefinder is a mirroless camera, okay, now, where's the booze? I think it might make more sense if I'm a bit toasted.

Kind of misses the point a bit :)

Actually my initial reaction to the “Leica "almost ready" with its mirrorless solution?” rumour was the same: “Almost ready? There have been mirrorless Leicas for many decades!” You cannot blame Leica when people spreading rumours prove to be clueless (again).

So. Where is the mirror in a rangefinder?

I'd say Leicas have been mirrorless since 1925

andy!!!!!!!! You know just as well as I that all rangefinders use a moveable mirrored/silvered/prism system to focus.

If Leica wants to play, or pull straws, with what is now in the market mostly considered to be a camera with some sort of EV instead of a reflex design that's fine. But to call a rangefinder a 'mirrorless' camera seems to be a stretch that serves their marketing need.

Leica UK denies rumors of a new mirrorless system | Leica News & Rumors

I just added comment:

1) “camera along the lines of a Panasonic Micro Four Thirds model which carries a smaller imaging sensor” – NO

2) “M9, but it is definitely too early to discuss a successor to this model.” – NO SUCCESSOR YET, SURE

BUT

what it has in common with new line, not Micro 43, not M9 successor – FF EVIL?

You know just as well that ‘mirror’ in ‘mirrorless system camera’ is referring specifically to the reflex mirror of an SLR. Not to a prism in a rangefinder.

Anyway, there was this stupid rumour and Leica decided to take it literally just to poke fun at the people spreading it. No harm in that.

Of course. But then isn't it kind of poking fun at past loyal users that you've promised something to? Just a bit 'unprofessional' seeing that they couldn't follow up as promised (in a reasonable time period at least) on the R solution, perhaps it would be best for Leica to just not reply until they actually have a camera 'solurion'.

I certainly have very little expectation of anything from them outside the M. To me, the S was a bad decision that just resulted in the dumping of any hope of an R solution. Heck have they completed the production of the S ystem lenses yet? How can anyone think they'll come out with another camera and a system until they can deliver as promised?

That will be the reason why Leica never made an official announcement. The “R solution” was repeatedly hinted at on various occasions, but there was no official announcement that (and when) they would actually build it. It’s still too early and it might still turn out that the project will never come to fruition. All we know is that it probably won’t be ready for photokina 2012.

Michael, thanks again for bring some sound, straight forward thinking to this never ending ranting. I always look forward to reading your posts. I assume you are an engineer or a very well educated man in these regards. Personally I am very much invested in R gear, with 3 R8's for film & a DMR for my digital SLR work, along with an M2, M3. M8 & CL.

I don't know what the emotional issue is with the concept of an EVIL camera for use with manual glass. I use my R80 Lux, 50 Cron & 50 Lux with my Digilux3 (using the Live View) rather frequently. I love the files it produces.

Thanks again for bringing a clear, concise & thoughtful voice to the Forum.
