Hello Stuart.

 

 

We all know that MF film had a clear advantage over the 35mm format, but with Digital thats not the case.

The margin is getting closer all the time for the fraction of the price you pay for a MF camera.

Could there be a case for Leica reintroducing some of the most favoured R lenses such as the 180/2 or the 100mm macro? What about Zeiss and their SLR lenses. Did they ever do anything with the R mount?

 

The success and practicality must surely hinge on whether there is some form of auto-diaphragm operation and open aperture metering. The usability is severely compromised without both but you could think of some sort of interface between the R "extension tube" and the M10. Might look a bit of a clunker but the Frankenfinder is no beauty so they have "previous".

I doubt reintroduction of R lenses will ever take place. Those who kept their or bought on the cheap, especially long APOs, over last few years could be for a real treat. Most probably new M camera to be announced on 17 September will have live view capability which as a side effect will provide R solution via EVF - it better be full frame as NEX6 and Fuji X-E1 already provide adequate APS-C/EVF stop-down solution.

 

It is of course interesting what new R adapter is going to provide, if it offers some sort of aperture control all for the better but than any other lens should fit via simple extension tube type adaptor - including various Zeiss lenses made for Ca-Nik-Sony (D)SLRs.

Auto-diaphragm and open aperture metering on the M10? Would need a motor in the adapter and electrical contacts on the latter, the M10 and the lens i guess. Is it feasible technically and financially? Sounds too good to be true with respect...

I think that is a good point and would require a substantial change to the M platform to accommodate it. Perhaps electrical contacts will come eventually for other reasons.

 

Maybe Leica's R adapter will just have a simple quick activation button for the aperture. (Even a dual cable release?)

Maybe instead they will have an external electrical device that sits over the shutter release button and it sends a signal to close the aperture via a wire to the adapter. This could use its own battery pack that would require a completely different charger than the M10 uses. Or maybe they could use hydraulics or pneumatics. Or a mechanical lever arrangement like on the Visoflex. Plenty of possibilities exist. I guess this isn't even up to a 50's state of the art solution like the Exacta and Alpa semi auto diaphragm.

How would this work for APO-Telyt-R module lenses? It's already a long reach forward for the focussing ring on the long module. If I have to pull my head 30cm away from the camera back to see the live view, to compose and focus, I wont be able to reach the focussing ring! I'll look like I really am playing a trombone.

 

Further, with my 50 YO eyes, using live view will mean cranking my eyes all the way in (after having taken my specs off). They won't be able to see what the the birdies are doing at 2.5 m away when I take a quick look around the camera. Jeez!

 

Whereas, with a proper Leica viewfinder I can keep my specs on, look through the eyepiece at a focussing screen that's infinity away, then look at the subject with the same eye settings. No slow eyeball accommodation to wait for. No need to put specs on or off. Perfect! I want an R10, not an M10, dammit!

 

As a fallback, Leica really need to bring out an adapter so long R lenses can be used with the S2, as has been done here.

One of my long-time customers expressed an interest in possibly converting one of his APO-Telyt-Modular focus modules to S mount. He had used a Kapture Group adapter solution to mount the lens on an optical bench to a Phase One P45+ and the image circle covered the full 36x48mm area of the sensor. The challenge in converting a 35mm lens to medium format, in this case the S2, is that the register distance is shorter than the original lens design. This means that using an attached adapter would put the rear element too far away and infinity focus wouldn’t be able to be achieved. So, we knew that the lens barrel would have to be shortened. Another complication was that the aperture ring is all the way at the rear of the lens – the very same area we needed to shorten. But, through the skill and persistence of our machinist, the aperture ring was repositioned forward with all the mechanical linkage reworked so that full aperture control could be retained. Because of the lengths required, only the 1.4x and 2x modules can be adapted at this time. The 1x module just doesn’t have a long enough barrel at the rear for the aperture ring to be accommodated.

The adapter in the link I posted connects unmodified R telephoto lenses to the S2. Now that's a great idea.

Just curious, if 1.4x & 2x modules need shortening to achieve infinity focus than bolting extension tube on the end of R lens (adapter) is not going to provide infinity focus or am I missing something :confused:

Now? The market for used Leica-R lenses is down only because there is no Leica-R body.

 

IMHO the market for used Leica R lenses is down simply because all the worth a while samples are all scooped up and never be seen again. :-)

 

I reckon making the biggest and baddest camera has always been Leica's dream - which was why they wanted by take over Hassy and then, ditched the R in favor of building the S - which has even less audience - whether it makes money or not is just of no importance, there is enough profit from the M series to subsidize it.

Using the eye level electronic viewfinder (EVF) might be a better approach.

How about this loupe from Hoodman? HoodLoupe 3.0-Hoodman Corporation You can use this to view live view image. I am thinking of using this with my RX100.

Hello Amband.

 

I think you misunderstood me, and I apologise for that.

 

What I was refering too, is that in the medium format film due to it's size it had a CLEAR ADVANTAGE

Over the 35mm Film.

However in Digital MF this big advantage is not there as FF Digital Cameras are starting to close the gap

with the MF sensors for a fraction of the cost.

I hope that clears it up.

That's a great iPhone app. Marvellous things, these and iPads. We use an iPad to remote-control a Yamaha mixer for live performances. Excellent technology. :)
