Advertisement Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Hi zlatkob, Take a look here My Leica M9 got stolen. :((((. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Jeff S Posted January 11, 2011 Share #22 Posted January 11, 2011 My condolences. A couple of people have inquired about insurance, which you no doubt didn't have considering your grief. You're unfortunately not the first person in the forums grieving over stolen (or damaged) gear. A hard lesson, but one I encourage you and others to think about for future expensive camera equipment purchases, which you also will no doubt experience, even though you aren't currently in an optimistic mood. I think the issue of insurance (and other safeguards...registration, etc.) could be included in the M9 sticky. Insurance is relatively inexpensive (at least here in the US), the equivalent of far less than I used to spend annually on film. Mine covers loss and/or damage in all situations, regardless of fault or circumstance, and provides great peace of mind. With the price of camera gear (often involving multiple cameras and lenses) approaching that of some cars, I treat them the same insurance-wise. A necessary cost of doing business, even if just for personal use. Regardless, I hope your camera and lens are found soon. Jeff
dorukt Posted January 11, 2011 Author Share #23 Posted January 11, 2011 Thank you so much guys. I finally found my serial number. wudai_e Posted January 11, 2011 Share #24 Posted January 11, 2011 Very sorry to hear this, I can only imagine what you are going through, hope the luck will turn to your side and your M9 and lens will show up tomorrow! It might just will be! In the mean time, cheer up, it's only a camera.
Washington Posted January 11, 2011 Share #25 Posted January 11, 2011 I did not know the serial # was in the photo data either. Good luck getting it back.
erl Posted January 11, 2011 Share #26 Posted January 11, 2011 Zlatkob, thanks for posting the ser.# locations. IMHO the location in PS is entirely non-user friendly. I don't have LR. C1 does not appear to record the info at all. Anyway, this hassle for me is miniscule compared to the OP who has lost his camera!
k-hawinkler Posted January 11, 2011 Share #27 Posted January 11, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) One easy way on a Macintosh to show the M9 serial number in a DNG file is to open it with Preview. Then choose Tools/Show Inspector, then Exif. Last line shows the serial number on my system. I am running Mac OS X 10.6.6 in 64 bit mode. Of course, under View/Customize Toolbar ... you can arrange that the Inspector is always visible at the top of an image. k-hawinkler
jaques Posted January 11, 2011 Share #28 Posted January 11, 2011 as Jaap said selling an M9 is not so easy- at least not for its actual value- I know it may be hard- but have you considered offering a cash reward for the camera? You could put signs up all around the area where this happened. You can offer a 'no questions asked' reward... This could be the best way for the thief to get a 'good' price for the camera. It is a long shot I know. If the theft was accomplished with a jamming device the criminals may be 'hardened'- if it was simply a case that the doors didn't lock- it could just be an opportunist (youth?) theft... Good Luck. I am going to insure my M9 now...
phancj Posted January 11, 2011 Share #29 Posted January 11, 2011 I agree that it is an extremely difficult thing to sell. Too niche. And having the serial number helps since leica wont service this camera and probably alarm bells go off when anyone attempts to send it in for repair. My wife's one month old macbook pro was stolen and I reported to apple they told me honestly they could do NOTHING and the thief will still enjoy the one year warranty WITHOUT receipt altho I transferred applecare to the new one I bought. Since macbooks are so easy to resell it really sucks. Thieves should be punished, but in this case rewarded. I also notice police in every country probably got loads of things to do it may do you some good if you keep on updating and checking with them. They may just decide to investigate just to get you off their backs? Also inform Leica of the situation and serial numbers of sure. I hope you get it back, and the thief lands in jail! CJ PS: Insurance may/may not help. In my case, after police investigation the insurance company did not want to pay. Sucks.
andybarton Posted January 11, 2011 Share #30 Posted January 11, 2011 Insurance is unlikely to pay out if the camera was left in an unlocked car anyway. A few years ago, a colleague of mine had his car stolen from a petrol station while paying for his fuel. Stupidly, he left his keys in the ignition, but was only about 20 feet from the car. The thief just jumped in and drove off with a full tank. He got no insurance payout as he was negligent and was about twenty five grand out of pocket. Dannybuoy Posted January 11, 2011 Share #31 Posted January 11, 2011 That's really terrible news. Please don't do anything stupid. No camera is worth taking your life for. Well maybe an M9 Titanium. I jest. I jest. Hope you can track it down. The moral to this story is. Get INSURANCE. I'd love to know the percentage of people who have and don't have their M9s insured. For the price of a round of drinks a month you can insure all your kit and these situations can be avoided. (In ref to the above post, you can get a policy that covers these circumstances. My policy covers me for this kind of situation) Hope you can track it down. Or you could set up a website explaining your story and ask for donations for a new one. I'd paypal you a few quid ;-) or enter te competition to win Seal's M9 over at stevehuffphoto.com
leicatiman Posted January 11, 2011 Share #32 Posted January 11, 2011 I thank you for posting this information. By sharing this with us, you have not only increased the chances that your camera will show up, but you have also showed us how we can reduce the chances of such a misfortune reoccurring. By the time the M10 comes out, you will have recovered from this loss and you will remember the community that offered helpful ideas and sympathy. Whenever one of us believes that our suffering is unique, we've lost touch with reality. Best of luck to you. I hope you will be sharpening your skills with another camera while you save up for your next Leica.
blakley Posted January 11, 2011 Share #33 Posted January 11, 2011 Just in case this may be useful to you... Even if you don't have insurance, if you bought the camera with a credit card within the last couple of months, some credit card companies provide "free" insurance against theft for items purchased using their cards. It's worth getting in touch with your credit card company to see if you are covered in this way.

That amazes me; I have a Macpro and if I report a theft to Apple the computer will be blocked by Apple as soon as it connects to the Internet. Thiefs know this; a local school was broken into twice - all screens and PCs were taken - twice!. And the burglars left all Macs in place.
wattsy Posted January 11, 2011 Share #36 Posted January 11, 2011 I have a Macpro and if I report a theft to Apple the computer will be blocked by Apple as soon as it connects to the Internet. Thiefs know this First I've ever heard of this (and I've used Macs for over 20 years). I know that the iPhone and iPad can be remotely reset and the location of the device roughly determined (if the user uses Find my iPhone) but I've never heard of a similar thing for desktop Macs. Do you have a reference for this service Jaap?
jaapv Posted January 11, 2011 Share #37 Posted January 11, 2011 It is what the supplier told me. If I lie I was not the inventor - I'd have to inquire.

This happened to someone I worked with, he was miles away from home after a business meeting on a Friday evening, stopped to fuel up and left the keys in the car as he went to pay, realised he'd left his wallet in the car and as he turned around he saw his car - with his wallet, phone, house keys, laptop etc., speeding off the forecourt! I now always lock my car when I go to pay for my fuel!
earleygallery Posted January 11, 2011 Share #39 Posted January 11, 2011 Why do you asterisk the number out? It is in your best interest to publicize the full number as widely as possible! You need to post a message giving the full description of your camera/lens (colour, full serial number etc) if you want people to try to help - someone may spot it for sale somewhere!
