X1 or D-lux5?..

X1 - fixed focal length lens 36mm (equivalent), large sensor for better quality, less depth of field than small sensor camera

Dlux5 - more compact small sensor digicam with wideangle - short telephoto zoom, optional Electronic ViewFinder EVF. Same camera as cheaper Panasonic Lx5 but with better warranty and software package.

Never even looked at buying a X1. To limited in its use, IE fixed lens.

Ordered a DL5 but cancelled the order and bought a LX5, same camera (no need for the longer warranty or software, have PS CS3/4/5 and Lighroom already). Wider lense, faster lens at the widest and at the X1 focal length, X1 is a f/2.8 LX/DL5 is f/2.3 @ 35mm equivalent. Smaller and with the LX5 you get a built in grip. Faster auto focus from what I hear. To date the X1 is slow to focus but some say this has improved with newer firmware but that firmware is vaporware right now.

Much lower cost and if you go with the LX5 it is even lower.

Do you want a large sensor or small sensor compact? Do you want a fixed lens or zoom lens?

Which one has the absolute best image quality for a P&S? X1 or DL5.

I don't mind the limitations of a fixed lens- use to shot all the time with a Contax T2.

x1: different user interface (wheels for aparture and time), better lens, less depth of field, more dynamic range, better for shooting without flash due to larger sensor=>less noise

D-lux 5: more flexible regarding focal length (zoom), more compact, more DOF, faster focus,

You can do more things than one assumes with just 35mm fov

It is really interesting that many people here in the forum really compare X1 with D-Lux 5; there are several asks for advices before buying one of there two, although these cameras are very different!

So I can say - that the D-Lux 5 is (together with Lightroom 3) a really good bargain - knowing the limitations in comparance to the X1 of course! But noone seems to be here to compare X1 with M8, and that is what I expect when I see the price difference of X1 and used M8! So I think I made a good buy with my D-Lux 5 :D

So how close is the X1 to an M8 in terms of sheer image quality with same equavelent lens on an M8? I would be saving thousand of dollars, plus getting a more up to date camera with the X1. For up to 11"x14" prints.?

Thank you.

I guess, that the image quality of M8 with an equivalent lens to the 35mm is so good than it is worth the price.

Compared to X1 I save more then half of the price when I buy a D-Lux 5 and do not get pictures half good :)

Leica and "good bargain" is an oxymoron. I wouldn't call USD 800 for a small sensor camera with Lr3 a bargain. New entry level DSLRs cost about USD 300 less these days.

Not an oxymoron at all! When you see LR costs 300 Euro (I have German/EU prices only, sorry for that) the cam is really not much more expensive then the LX-5. I did not own LR3 and wanted to buy it 2010, so for me it was a nice "gimmick" to the D-Lux 5.

So you have to compare the D-Lux 5 with other compact cameras and then yo see that it is - for Leica - really a bargain! And worth every cent (Eurocent and US-Cent :D)

These entry level DSLR I know very well, and they are not worth the price of 500 USD IMHO. Thin plastic where you look, and "Kit Optics" which are not sensitive to light and with chromatic abberation. Colors which are not natural. And bulky when you compare to compact cameras. Not my thing. I prefer better a very good compact camera and can live with the compromises I have to accept from the principle of that cam, then to buy a cheap DSLR and dealing with comprimizes I can not accept for serious photography.

You really think the LX5 has better image quality than the X1?

Don't know. I don't own a X1 and only handled one for about 5 minutes at the Leica M9 workshop I went to. It was belonged to another person at the workshop.

I have a M8 with a full compliment of lenses. No need for a slightly smaller camera with a fixed lens no matter how good the IQ is. I do need a small camera for certain times. Tried the Canon S90, it was OK (still have it). But like the LX5 for what it is and the IQ isn't that bad. I really don't plan on printing to many images made with this camera. But I'm finding in 8x11 prints the images stand up. Not sure I would print much bigger from those images.

I have no problem printing 13x19 with M8 images.

EDIT

By the way how many images are you getting per battery charge on your DL5? In another thread some posted that they only get 100 images from a battery charge with there DL5. With my LX5 I get much more then that. In fact I did a little test and got over 350 before the battery meter went from full, 3 bars, to 2/3 full, 2 bars. Got tired of pushing the shutter button so I just recharged the battery. That was over a 2 day period using the camera in many different modes both inside and out.

I really have no interest in the X1 so I really don't care what the image quality is. I know it is not as good as the M8 and probably slightly better then any P&S. Never really looked at any X1 images on my screen or through my printer. I did do that with M9 images because at one time I was interested in it.

Once I got to use a M9 for a few hours and took those images home and compared them to images I took the same day with my M8 I've never even thought about buying a M9.

I also used the LX 5 that day.

Here 3 shots. One from each camera. Tell me which shot came from the LX5 without looking at the EXIF.
