Yes, but it is the results which count...:)

Well, the D-Lux 5 is for sure a good camera. Nevertheless, are you sure the D-Lux 5 lens is capable of producing the same results as the Digilux 2 lens?

Moreover, there ARE people who appreciate the opportunity of manual controls at the D2 lens...:)

Hello,

As I was able to read here and there, the results are not very remote.

Digilux 2 benefits from an excellent optics. That of D-Lux 5 is not bad.

Only D-Lux 5 was made 8 years later and benefits from a much more recent digital technology.

I have to buy Digilux 2 which is in very good condition.

But I am afraid of having similar results and so I do not manage to decide...

I have both the Digilux 2 and the D-Lux 5 and, although the D-Lux 5 can produce *similar* results to the Digilux 2 owing to the flexibility offered by numerous film emulating modes etc it is not its strongest point.

Certainly for me the Digilux 2's jpegs still have that something extra beyond the D-Lux 5's (still very good) jpegs. The D-lux 5 has superior features but the Digilux 2 has superior handling.

Pete.

Well, as far as I am concearned, I will never sell my Digilux 2, since it's a pleasure to shoot with it despite its plain technologicl limits coming from its age: the optical viewfinder is really a low resolution one, you almost have to limit ISO to 100, and so on.

But the pleasure to use such a camera is really great, thanks a very good interface, right size, very good lens usable in manual mode, and so on.

The photos taken at ISO 100 leaves nothing to desire, and have almost a film look if compared to newest cameras.

If you can live with the limited DOF (see the image below, 90 mm eq. and f:2,4, with SF-24D flash), the results will make you happy. Anyway, the same DOF problem should be present even in the D-lux5, since the sensor size is quite similar.

Obviously, I can't recommend it as the only digital camera one could have.

I think its also important to actually like your camera. What it feels like, what it looks like, give you pleasure every time you use it. Makes you go out and take photos! The Digilux 2 does that for me. My "other camera" is a Panasonic G1, which is a very capable camera. Takes great pictures, but boring to use to be honest. One of the reasons I didn't buy a D Lux 5 and settled for the Digilux 2 is that I thought it would be too much like the G1 to use.

At the end of the day its what you like.

Absolutely yes, the Digilux 2 is much more nice to use than Pana G1. I prefer it to the Digilux 3, at the point that I will sell the D3 since I'm not using it anymore. In fact I'm now using the Digilux 2 for fun and the Leica R and D lenses with the Olympus E-3 (or my Nikon equipment) when I need something more sophisticated.

OK and still thank you for these elements.

Things being what they are, D-Lux 5 is not unpleasant to use. But I understand that the ergonomics of Digilux 2 is sharply better.

She calls back a little the analogical devices.

But it is especially the objective which looks like a big jewel...:p

I can only speak for my experiences with the DLux4 which I sold to fund the purchase of my D2, of which I now have two.

Sure the DLux can produce some very nice images, and occasionally, as I browse my hardrive I will mistake (for a moment) a DLux 4 image as a D2; but for me there is a definite difference in the tonal range and the subtlety of the D2 images that the DLux4 (in my hands) could never achieve, which ever mode it was in.

Of course again, there is something very... right, about the control layout of the D2, especially if you have used film cameras, and I cant help thinking why it was that Leica decided to put such a huge chunk of glass on the D2. Others here of a more technical bent, talk about the marriage of the lens to the sensor. When you look at the results I can't help but go along with that.

As for the sensor, it is only 5MP, but when you consider you can comfortably produce prints approaching A3, and the physical size of the sensor in relation to the pixels again is advantageous to reducing noise (as I understand it).

In short, the D2 is very different.

I would add that the D2 viewfinder whilst acceptable, could be better, and as I always shoot manual, I'm aware that I almost never use the camera in anything other than ISO100.

It is big, and heavy, and some might say, it looks dated, so not everything is so rosey.

Hello,

Yes, I think that the marriage of this sensor of only 5 MP and it fabulous objective is excellent.

The high-quality images produced by D2 are the fruit of this marriage.

Hi Guy,

Can endorse all that has been said, the D2 is a marvelous machine to use, and it's 5 meg sensor doesn't let it down. The camera is ergonamically nice to use and feels well in the users hand, it is easy to use since you are not delving down into menues to set the thing.

It takes good pics and looks good too.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi guys,

Just registered on here and have been obsessing over Leicas for years. I've always had standard point and shoot digitals or used my phone but despite getting the composition have always wanted more control and better quality images.

Anyway, one thing I do know about digital photography is that a good sensor and lens trumps MPs any day and this little beauty looks like the ideal mix of affordability, style, control and quality.

The only thing now is to find one......

Not many seem to pop up on ebay so does anyone else have any ideas on where I should look. (I'm in the UK)

Cheers,

Ben

p.s. Sorry Hank for hijacking your thread.

Hello to you all. bandrews have you thought about the SEXIER looking, much more beautiful, twin sister of the D2 the LC1. Exactly the same but in black, with the same Leica lens and produces photos just as good as the D2 anytime. Its the only Leica product I own and can afford (its cheaper than the D2).

It seems to be much rarer to get hold of. Have patience and good luck.:D:D;)

SEXIER ? than the D2 ? You need to look at my lovely girl . . .

Agreed, Dave.

Or mine. Is there anything much sexier than skin-tight leather with a snake-like silk strap.:p

(I do like the all-black LC-1 too.:))

Yeah, sorry 4foxes, I'm with the other guys. Love the retro look of the D2 (will go well on the shelf with the old school Polaroid and Kodak Instamatic). Just been through a load of stuff and got it on eBay to make a few quid to fund my new obsession.....
