Hello All,

My lovely fiance has offered to fund a Photography Workshop for my birthday gift.

I've never attended a workshop and thus am looking for recommendations from photographers with experience in this area.

Has anyone attended a National Geographic Weekend workshop? What was it like?

also the same query for Nikon sponsored workshops (Summit, Santa Fe, Digital Light, Etc)

Thank you and all comments appreciated.

Dave

You could do a lot worse than go on one of these trips if you fancied some time in South America.

I've been following Daniel Milnor for quite a while and we've traded emails and ideas on things. He's a tremendously insightful observer, well known for his approach to documentary projects, love of black and white, and for being a long time Leica photographer. His work is excellent by any standard.

Dave, I have been involved with David Turnley and his workshops for over 3 years. David is a Pulitzer Prize winning photographer & just such a special person. You could also ask Virgil (vdb) & Richard (semrich), both of whom I had the distinct pleasure of spending a week with during the last Workshop last September. The next workshop is May 9 - 14, then June 27 - July 2 & then again September 19 - 24, all in NYC. Feel free PM me for details.

The workshops mentioned are in NYC, in Greenwich Village. David just finished his annual Workshop in Capetown, South Africa, last week. He lived there for many years and was the first photographer to meet Nelson Mandela while he was in jail & photograph him while he was still incarcerated & when he was finally released.

Dave, as Ben said, I too participated in David Turnley's workshop in NYC last fall. One of the most enjoyable weeks I have ever had. David is a wonderful teacher with a soft, subtle style. His effect is quite potent and is still lingering in me. His approach is more psychological than technical. So don't expect to learn Photoshop or dry technicalities...not really necessary in his workshop. The effect of the group dynamic was equally educational. I can't wait to return next year.

The Santa Fe workshops are fun and relaxing. More technically oriented...particularly helpful if you have a specific tool you want to learn.

I'm happy to chat with you about these workshops. Send me a pm and I will giv you my number.

Hi,

I plan to come over from Norway to attend David Turnleys september photo workshop in New York. Instead of shooting digital I like to shoot film (c-41 or E-6). Therefore I will need the opportunity to every day of the workshop have my exposed c-41 and/or E-6 filmrolls developed AND scanned with the imagefiles to a CD within few hours.

Does anybody know if there are photo labs offering such service in Greenwich Village?

I visited New York City for the first time last year, on a photo workshop with Thorsten Overgaard. It was an incredible several days and I absolutely fell in love with NYC.

Ben, I've long been impressed with the work of David Turnley (not to mention yourself) and thought maybe I'd try and do one of his NYC workshops in 2012. Now I'm wondering whether maybe I should try and pull that up a little and catch one of his later ones this year - maybe the one in September. Do you have any idea how quickly his dates fill up and when I'd have to commit by? It sure seemed like you and Virgil and Richard and the rest of the guys had a terrific time last year.

Dave, you better marry that girl quick. You got a good one!
