Anyone else tempted to trade X1 for an X100?

I'm sorry, but the overall slowness of my X1 continues to severely disappoint.

 

Haven't handled the Fuji X100 yet but if Leica firmware 2.0 doesn't speed up this lil' puppy, I'll be sorely tempted by the Fuji X100 when it finally arrives in the States next Spring.

 

Anyone else having the same thought?

The slow focus speed of the X1 has started to annoy.

I've reached the point where the brilliant IQ is failing to outweigh the dreary use of such a pedestrian camera. Just too many missed shots. The honeymoon is over!

 

If Leica have found a way to improve the focus speed while maintaining accuracy ( and at this point I'm still sceptical ) then it's high time they let their customers test out a temporary fix.

Even a limited update just improving manual focusing would make the world of difference.

 

Meanwhile , if Fuji can produce a cracking lens to match the X1 ( which I doubt based on past Fuji ownership ) with improved camera usability , then I'll be lining up to make the change.

Personally I see the next competitor coming from Sony.

Actually, I wanted an X100 but was them tempted by the X1 instead. Funny how that works...

 

Seriously though, I thought it wasn't worth waiting for a minimum of several months, to try to buy a camera that may experience shortages and markups, that may not have the same level of image quality as lesser cameras, that has untested techonology, that is trying to capitalize on the Leica look but actually isn't, etc, etc, etc.

 

There are plenty of cameras that are cheaper than the X1 and have lower image quality in the same size package. Aside from the looks and the viewfinder design, why is the X100 any different?

The X1 can only be replaced by something similarly pocketable, which won't be the X100. I have the Ricoh GXR with 50mm equiv. module and the X1. If the FW update does not come soon and improve the Leica's AF speed to the Ricoh's level (a macro lens notably), I'm tempted to sell the X1 and add the 28mm module to the GXR instead. Ricoh lauched the GXR around the same time as Leica its X1, but issued already two FW upgrades since, boosting AF speed of the 50mm module significantly.

From what I have read and after a brief hands-on with an Olympus EP-1 I suspect the slow AF is due in large part to the larger APS sensor on the compact camera. The Olympus was no faster and this may be an inherent drawback of this kind of camera. Perhaps someone with more expertise on this could give a detailed explanation as to why this is so? My bet is that the Fuji won't be significantly faster than the X1. The diminutive D-Lux 5 with its smaller sensor is a lot faster already -- and of course the wider DOF avoids focusing mishits, although not completely. I find AF is a lot trickier to use than RF, which is always precise and reliable, but that may just be me and what I'm used to.

After FW upgrades, Oly mfts AF speed is quite a bit faster than the X1 and Panasonics mft beat it by quite a margin. The Sony NEX and Ricoh's GXR with 50 and 28mm module respectively have same size sensors as the X1 and have considerably faster AF. There is no excuse for Leica not to deliver. After Sigma's DP, it is clearly the slowest of the group.

In the case of Sony nex, it would appear that is accomplished at the expense of accuracy, by all reports. I don't own one but af inconsistency has been the larges reported issue under pre firmware menu structure difficulties.

 

I continue to watch the nex with interest, but I really think they need good zeiss quality glass with af..I don't want to play the 'rotate back to the dealer' inconsistency game with the prime and there's absolutely nothing fast with af that performs anywhere near the x1 in iq.

 

2.8 is a minimum fora pocket aspc IMO, I'd rather faster but understand the difficulty

 

I think the next generation, or a year from now the nex is going to become very compelling...if Sony can get their books in order.

I'm going to wait for the X200 because I heard Fuji is making the body out of pure unobtanium, and it will take R lenses.

 

That will be a big improvement on the X100 body on display at Fotokina, which was made out of timber.
