robert_parker Posted November 29, 2010 Share #1 Posted November 29, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Whilst considering a different thread it occurs to me that this might be a good time to dig out a Leica 111g that I bought some years ago, that I strongly suspect may be unused. The camera comes without papers or box, which I'm releived to say means that I feel that I can get it serviced and put into use, rather than hold onto it as a museum piece. I would appreciate it if anyone had thoughts as to who might best accomplish a sympathetic resporation of a camera of this type, which currently, when set to 1s exposure, runs at about 2.5s.......which is probably to be expected if no-one's put a film in it since 1963..... I'm know the usual suspects but would be interested in anyone's practical experience. My thoughts in general go towards W. vMannen, Malcolm Taylor, Don Goldberg and fm. Reinhard (Sheree Krauter has appraised it originally but hasn't serviced it) but I'd appreciate any comments.

Malcolm Taylor did a superb job on my III, and has sorted out several lenses, including fungus, separation of cemented pairs etc. He has the reputation of being by a long way the best repairer in UK, even Leica MK has used him I understand! mikebidwell Posted November 29, 2010 Share #3 Posted November 29, 2010 Robert, As we both live in relatively the same locality I'd recommend Malcolm Taylor to CLA your IIIg without ant hesitation. He's done my IIIg & IIIf Red Dial including the respective lenses and has recently sorted out a 90mm Tele-Elmarit which I thought was going to end up as a very expensive paperweight because of the well known problem. Anyway he sorted it for me all it wanted was a good clean . Best wishes Mike
ejd Posted December 1, 2010 Share #4 Posted December 1, 2010 Peter Grisaffi at CRR Luton CAMERA REPAIRS & RESTORATION - LUTON , ENGLAND is also very good. His web site always says 'not accepting anything for repair until....' but if you write to him he is very helpful. (I think an actual letter not an email is needed, but maybe a phone call or a text message, which is a novelty on his site, is OK.)
cbretteville Posted December 1, 2010 Share #5 Posted December 1, 2010 Robert, My only experience is with Don Goldberg and it is a very good one. He has worked on my IIIf (full CLA, fixed slow times, replaced parts of the VF and new shutter curtains), M3 (full CLA and recover with a new levant cover from Cameraleather) and M6 (CLA, upgrade to MP finder optics, same recover as the M3 got) as well as several lenses that he has worked on. I use him even if his turn around time can be long. I've been sending him a box of stuff a year for the last three. As I live outside the EU there is a lot of paperwork that has to be in order to ensure that the equipment isn't taxed as new imports when they are returned to me. Although I 100% recommend DAG for his fantastic work I suggest you save your self some hassle and use one of the wizards inside the EU. Cheers, Carl
earleygallery Posted December 2, 2010 Share #6 Posted December 2, 2010 Robert, if it's a straight forward CLA I would also suggest talking to your local Leica dealer as they will most probably have a repair tech that they use for non warranty work. I know Ivor at Red Dot has, or had, such a contact.
