I am very pleased that you post a new theme about the MD-2. It is a very pleasant camera, very light. I use it on Visoflex and focuslide OOTGU-M.

I had two of them. Both are marked CANADA on the back side. It seem that only 951 ex. were made in Canada, but I never saw any camera marked Wetzlar or Germany, only Canada. Where was they assembled?

It seem also that there is a doubt about the year of the first issue 1980 or 1981 depending on different books.

I suppose Leitz made the MD-2 shortly after the M4-2, probably there was a demand as the MDa production ceased. My MD-2 have the serial number 1 529 000, so it is earlier than what I read in literature. What do you think about it?

My MD-2 is also Canada made, has the serial number 17047xx and seems to be out of the last 80 to be made. The front has the appearance like yours JC, but the back differs, because it already has the single flash connector of the M6. I guess this one is fairly rare.

I would like to find out how many of this type were made, but that seems to be quite difficult. I´d be happy to find out, mybe you have some information on this.

Regards, Michael

Thanks for this interesting item, JC! It made me check my own MD-2 again, which I use with Visoflex III. It doesn't have a red logo on the front, as yours has. Mine has number 1502253, which was alotted to the M4-2. On the back it is engraved "Canada", which coincides with the M4-2 number. It seems to be produced in 1978-79.

Maybe I should better put the pics directly into the thread.

Anyone with information on this special M6 related MD-2 model?

JC, how come the picture of two M4-P's is showing instead of the MD-2? Also I have a question. It seems there were only 951 MD-2 bodies made in Canada (like my own), but when I see MD-2 on Ebay they always have the name Canada on the back. So I never seem to see Wetzlar MD-2's. Is that correct?

Thanks, Lex

Thanks for raising this subject again Lex. It seems to be quite hard to find information on the MD-2 cameras, even in this forum. Maybe we both are lucky one day ;)

Anyhow, I have sponsored some Pics of my special MD-2, which is M6 related.

I think that Leitz/Leica did not worry about this serial number,

it seems that they produced small series of MD-2 when they have orders for and so included/mixed them during the production with M4-2, M4-P early and M6 lately serial numbers.

Two years in between yours and mine from 1986.

Thanks JC. So far I haven´t encountered no other MD-2 yet in the www which has this M6 related feature. I guess they are still working hard every day on microscopes and have not found there way to a shelf life like mine ;)

Thanks, Michael
