Pity they do not detail the split between product lines : I should be curios to see the M9 and S2 contribution ; anyway is clear that M9 deserves a significant credit to this excellent growth and financial result; interesting also the big growth of R&D expenses versus the prior year... to say, the year in which M9 got surely a good toll of R&D expenses: one can hint that they are really working hard on something that will appear next year, given that it's hard to justify such an R&D expenditure in the first half of the year for the products released at Photokina...

It is heartening to know that Leica is doing well again. Good for Leica!

And here is Leica's message concerning quality control, to satisfy those who complain that Leica never speaks of it, "Moreover the quality especially of complex parts the Company buys from third parties constitutes a challenge, because the high Leica quality standards have to be applied uncompromisingly also in times of increasing demand and sales growth."

Yes, it is corporate talk for "We have some QC problems, we understand our responsibility, our heritage, and we are entirely committed to improvement."

All in all, most excellent!

A good set of results certainly, unfortunately at odds with my continuing disappointment with the M9 - slow, built down to a price, finish wearing terribly. After spending €60k on the Leica M in the last 4 years, this year I have spent precisely nothing.

The caution about the quality of bought-in components is interesting. No names mentioned but I can imagine a certain company in Rochester, NY is top of the list.

Excellent results and it is good to see the photographic side of the business doing so really well as for some time now it was the sport optics division that tended to "carry" the imaging business.

Good also to see some re-investment in R & D.....what can we expect next?

The M9 has three major advantages over the M8, 18mp, full frame and no IR lens fiters, significant steps forward in my view. And sorry I dont see a difference in the quality of the M9 compared to the M8. If you are talking about finish the black chrome on the M8 was not good and the ordinary chrome was somewhat dull compared to the cameras of the past. Show us your terribly worn finish on your M9. Perhaps an M9.2 will meet your expectations.

Well, the S2 is mentioned with the M9 with respect to revenue growth, so price is obviously a factor. Profits/margins might be a different story; not enough detail to know. Still encouraging nonetheless for the longer term.

I suspect the M9 Titanium will also be a good revenue source next half.:)

Very well done.

What is very interesting is the increase in R&D to 7,5 million € in first half of 2010. Wonder what they have cooking for the future. Considering they developed M9 and S2 with half of what they spend these days ...

That was exactly my thought also and that is the exciting part although they noted that year to year comparisons are difficult because they have now counted some things as R&D which before they could not do. It would be great if they managed to significantly spend more on R&D however. I also noticed that:

  • They have allowed the inventory numbers to go up significantly which means that after the severe austerity measures that they were forced to take they are presumably now in a position to respond much faster to eventual rising demand
  • They did not mention that they plan to break ground on the site they own in Wetzlar for the new factory. If they wish to further grow volumes I would say that the current Solms factory will be limiting.
  • The continued sales growth and the actual revenue growth that they managed to deliver in the last quarter is really good news for the company. After watching patchy M9 shipments and likewise the ASPH lenses since months they seem to have caught up with at least the M9 which are now on dealers shelves.....If the demand remains for M9 at a high level (which the backlog seems to confirm although not identified by product line!) it is all good news so far:).

Now you see what happens if one follows Frank's advice.:D

Agreed;)...now they need to take the next steps ....

Improve QC, reliability and ruggedness, by making the camera easier to put together and addressing their operations. This should IMHO be followed by the M10.

I guess that they will also need to soon start work on the new factory that is purpose built rather than a modified furniture factory with portacabins in the carpark as they have too little space today. :)

Hello Everybody,

It is good they are doing well. It is also good they are putting extra money into R & D. Usually a good choice regardless of how well someone might be doing.

I wonder if anyone else noticed the passage on P 2 of the English version: "Leica........is now present in the market w/ a complete & completely digital portfolio of cameras."

?

Best Regards,

Michael
