kamilsukun Posted October 30, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted October 30, 2010 What, exactly, has peeled off? The black rubber outer skin.
dpitt Posted October 30, 2010 Share #4 Posted October 30, 2010 The second D2 I bought is covered with leather. When it started to peel of, the previous owner pulled it off. Then he used the rubber as a template for cutting new leather pieces. The leather is stuck on the camera with double sided tape, so you can always put the rubber back. The end result does not look bad, and feels even better! It must be in use for a few years now, and it still holds. I got the detached rubber covering bits with the camera when I bought it. Overgaard Posted October 31, 2010 Share #7 Posted October 31, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I think Leica Customer Service can fix that rather easily. At least they glued mine back on at those spots where it was loose a year ago.
dhsimmonds Posted October 31, 2010 Share #8 Posted October 31, 2010 I have a similar problem with my LC1. I put it down to sustained travelling with it, on and off air conditioned vehicles straight into often blistering heat and humidity! It is very disconcerting when it starts to bubble up under your hands and an error message appears in the LCD screen "memory door open" and it doesn't allow you to shoot. I managed to overcome this temporarily by holding the card door shut whilst taking the shot...but not ideal for photography! I shall look around for a camera recovering specialist.....the camera is well worth it in my view. I never had this problem with my R9/DMR or any of my top end DSLR's. zinj Posted November 4, 2010 Share #11 Posted November 4, 2010 Leica replaced the covering on mine when they did the sensor replacement. I didn't even realize it was an issue and they took it upon themselves do just do it.
chouhsin Posted November 5, 2010 Share #12 Posted November 5, 2010 For my D2, the robber is not only comming off, but also swelling in size. I mean, when I try to put the half hanging robber of the memory card door back, it seems the robber is 1mm longer and wont fit! Does anyone also have this problem? Cheers, Hsin

Does anyone also have this problem? Cheers, Hsin The size/fit was always the problem. I don't know if it was a thermal issue in production or application design. But they never really wrapped the camera's body tightly... or else they grew in use.
kamilsukun Posted November 9, 2010 Author Share #14 Posted November 9, 2010 Thanks for all helpful answers. The 1 or 2 mm overlength is also an issue I'm facing. I wonder if it is intended to allow the thickness the glue may create.
chouhsin Posted December 18, 2010 Share #15 Posted December 18, 2010 As I said in my previous reply, my D2 is facing a serious peeling/swelling problem. It definately needs a face lift... So I decided to risk a bit and do the surgery myself. The doctor is in tonight... I bought a small square of brown leather from a local flea market and started to cut out the right forms. This first part seems to be an success... I think I'll soon have a very "Hermes" Leica D2. To be continued... Hsin

dhsimmonds Posted December 19, 2010 Share #17 Posted December 19, 2010 Hsin The new leather looks very smart on your D2, but I was a bit concerned to see the mallet on the table! The D2 is quite a tough little camera though!
chouhsin Posted December 19, 2010 Share #18 Posted December 19, 2010 I was a bit concerned to see the mallet on the table! The D2 is quite a tough little camera though! Actually, that's for making those screw holes on the leather. There's no way I can cut out those holes with a cutter!
pico Posted December 19, 2010 Share #19 Posted December 19, 2010 Actually, that's for making those screw holes on the leather. There's no way I can cut out those holes with a cutter! There are hollow leather punches as small as 3mm.
chouhsin Posted December 19, 2010 Share #20 Posted December 19, 2010 It snowed in Paris today and I hate cold and wet weather. So I stayed home continue working on my "Hermes project". Here's some pictures of the final result. And now, even there's a blizzard out there, I am ready to face the bad weather.
