kivis Posted October 12, 2010 Share #1 Posted October 12, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have heard many opinions both ways. Double stroke wind lever or single stroke? Which do you prefer?
Advertisement Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 Hi kivis, Take a look here Leica M3 - DS or SS?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!

cbretteville Posted October 12, 2010 Share #3 Posted October 12, 2010 I have a DS. When switching back to the M6 I some times double stroke that, but it dosen't matter. You will be happy with either. Just remember to factor in a CLA in the cost. The ladies are getting old. Carl
roguewave Posted October 14, 2010 Share #4 Posted October 14, 2010 Akiva, I prefer the SS myself, although I have owned both versions. It matters very little. I recommend the M3 to everyone that wants to learn how to use a rangefinder, It has the largest viewfinder and is smooth as silk. Although I own & use many other M cameras, the M3 is very special. Enjoy the ride.
Posto 6 Posted October 15, 2010 Share #5 Posted October 15, 2010 I have one of each, and definitely prefer the SS- the DS is pleasant enough, but, together with the different speeds, is that bit less intuitive than the SS. If you do get a DS, go for a 1954 (S/N under 710 000) if investment potential is an issue, as the earlier ones are far more likely to hold their value as time goes by. iain parker Posted October 16, 2010 Share #6 Posted October 16, 2010 Double stroke, very intuitive and lovely to use.
CSG123 Posted October 17, 2010 Share #7 Posted October 17, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm looking for a DS version as I want an earlier one. You can save a bit of money too. A Leica camera is a thing to use deliberately so whether DS or SS, it's all good as long as you take your time.
tobey bilek Posted October 17, 2010 Share #8 Posted October 17, 2010 A DS is a pain if you are in a hurry. It is a pain to me under most all conditions. Word has been it is a stronger mechanism than ss. Both of mine failed. There are no parts left for them so ss replacement is all you can do. Leica used to make new transports when old replacement stock ran out. I seriously doubt they still do. It is simply not the same company anymore. I would recommend against a DS. luigi bertolotti Posted October 17, 2010 Share #9 Posted October 17, 2010 For use, better a SS, both for possible maintenance issues and ease of operating (even if I bet that with experience, DS can be even quickier than SS).
Neil Macmillan Posted October 17, 2010 Share #10 Posted October 17, 2010 Luigi, and others here, helped me with a recent purchase of DS M3. I am delighted with it, even though it's not getting as much use as it should. But even on my 1979 era non-motorized Canon F-1 (which I still have), I habitually double-stroked. You will grow into the use patterns of whatever you decide.
