This is the X1 Forum! We are here to learn how to get the most from the X1, not to discuss what other cameras and options we could use instead.

I think we all have other cameras we could be using with faster autofocus, zooms, etc. That's not the point. The point is to discuss how to maximize the potential of the X1.

Huh?

Get off your high horse cowboy. I asked if it had a focus button assigned. If you dont understand ask.

And of course Ive never used one or I'd damed well know and wouldnt have to ask.

Sorry cowgirl, the comment was based on your opening line.

Have you read this thread? http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-x1-forum/122773-proof-x1-can-shoot-action.html

A lot of people, myself included, explained how they shot the kind of action you are describing. You should have been able to prefocus at a spot on the ground, hold the shutter half way down, then take the photo when the subject hit the spot you pre-focused on. You might need to practice the technique, but it clearly works.

I have similar issues with the AF and feel the same frustrations. I can't remember where I recently read this, but there is supposed to be a firmware update that is coming down the pike towards the end of the year for our beloved X1's. My understanding is that there will be a "hyperfocal mode" in the update. Not sure what that will entail, but it may be well worth waiting for. Possibly some sort of built-in DOF calculator that will ease the pain of trying to zone focus???? I guess we'll find out soon enough.

I'll look to see if I can find where I read about this and post it here so anyone who wants to check it out can do so.

You mean Lazarus who clearly knows what he is doing should be told he doesnt?

I posted here to see if there was something I was overlooking. Your comment was directed at me, and was a nasty unnecessary comment.

If you want to continue to insult me, do me the courtesy of flying out and doing so to my face.

@Dan - I should have tried that, I do tend to forget about that feature, and it may have worked in this instance.

Watch out Rob the hooligan has bought a truckload of hoodies with X1 printed on the inside for his new boyz gang except for the one destined for X1s as is special :D .....................remember the X1 boyz' turf is under siege from the new fuji gang

Anyway hooligan why don't you put your money where your mouth is and fly out to visit him in his "Novacastrian Chapter" instead of threatening from afar.

Ever the catalyst eh? I've no desire to fly out to visit someone who is so obviously lacking in tact and courtesy.

I just don't understand why a simple request for help needs to be met with such random belittlement and insults.

Maybe he's a working pro photog ( I doubt it ) and the way to convince others of one's skill is antagonizing, you'd know better than I.

As to hoodies, unlikely for my needs. As always, a pleasure reading.

btw my online name is only indicative of my like of football, which is absent in North America.

I also have had problems focusing moving people and kids with other P&S cameras (but not w/ DSLRs). It's a common problem with all smaller cameras. Setting everything to manual (focus and metering), and using zone focus techniques should work, but I don't believe that is easy on the X1 (or, I'm not totally clear on how to do it properly). Small aperture and proper speed indoors would likely require a very high ISO. Probably using an external flash unit (w/ flash cord) is the best approach. This is a common problem w/ all small cameras.

Agreed. I do not think I will try to shoot weddings with the X1, even the M9 will be difficult unless the person has a wealth of experience. Though lacking in elegance (as some may perceive), DSLRs have their place in these situations where a versatile zoom means nailing more shots.

I think Leica cameras are for more considered shooting, you take your time, compose the shots, enjoy the process. For events I think I prefer DSLR to ensure all shots are covered.

You do have soccer though, don't you? ;) Hooliganism is generally considered to be one of football's less pleasant byproducts.

We do, it's just bad. I follow EPL as that's what I grew up with. I undertsand the meaning of hooliganism ;) if you met me you'd get the joke.

Jan, I never said I was giving up, making excuses, or whatever else your mind concocted. I asked for advice. I can't believe I have to put up with this type of answer from a simple inquisitive post.

I'm so tired of the curmudgeons around here. If you can't be helpful, why bother posting - just so everyone knows you can act like a petulant jerk? Habitual negative responses usually indicate someone who is pretty miserable. I can't believe some responses in here, or that the people spinning them have made it through life with fiends and thinking it's ok to act this way, or haven't been squarely punched in the nose by someone at some point for the attitude. Seriously, just try acting like a nicer person and watch life improve.

@jetexas - good point, I'll double check that it may be off. Thanks.

Then we did have hoologan's threat from afar when he challenged Rob to come over and repeat what he wrote which has all the hallmarks of a threat ................:)

and this one, even if it was a response to a perceived insult it still equates to a insult

now he bleats as if he is squeaky clean .........
