Currently, I still own my first serious digital camera (pansonic LC1) - every now and then, I take off the shelf- love that Summicron lens F2 to F2.4 Zoom lens. Â Not sure that I want a rangefinder. Â They are complementary, as any smaller and larger cameras are to each other: You'll always have the X1 within reach. Diehards apart, not everyone will always be carrying an M9 or M8. Â I don't think it's an either-or purchase. Assuming that you would buy an M9 to use with Leica lenses, the price of an X1 is a fraction of the cost of one lens. Â However the cameras do operate very differently and, money aside, that's where there is a choice to be made. If you're not prepared to try a film camera, why not get a used M8 and a 28 Elmarit to see if you like it. It'll give you a pretty compact package and a similar FOV to the X1. If you're set on the 50 'cron (why?), then you could try a 35 Summarit for about the same price as the 28 Elamarit. It would give you something close to the 50 mm FOV. What you achieve with your Nikons has satisfied you up to now; if you suddenly decide to go for such an expensive beast, without any prior knowledge of same, just to achieve a reduction in weight, you are asking for a serious let down, and possible disillusionment. i would suggest using a film M7 to see if you can get on with the rangefinder system. It will cost a lot less, and you will know instantly whether or not you can use it. If you don't like it, you can sell it for a little loss. prk60091 Posted October 4, 2010 Share #11  Posted October 4, 2010 I think this thread proves the genius of leica engineering in creating the x1-- it is like a "gateway drug" the images are that good  I too have toyed with buying a m9 and/or an used m8 but my wife has threatened divorce if i buy any more "stuff"- so i have to wait abit.. it's not like the x1 is deficient or anything (IMHO)- but it has inspired me to do more . . . and i suspect others as well. I would consider the M8 (2nd hand) i.s.o. the M9 - main (only) disadvantage would be the limited high ISO. At last reselling with little loss would be easier if you find you don't get on with a rangefinder. Â For me the primary Leica selling point is the optical quality of the lenses - even the old ones are phenomenal by most (modern) standards.
