RockyIII Posted September 24, 2010 Share #1 Posted September 24, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Since the lens is permanently attached, does that mean the X1 is totally sealed and immune from sensor dust, or can it still become a problem? jsrockit Posted September 24, 2010 Share #3 Posted September 24, 2010 Totally sealed - probably not. Very well protected, yes.
prk60091 Posted September 24, 2010 Share #4 Posted September 24, 2010 i never say never.... but in this case it should be immune from dust
soleforeal Posted September 24, 2010 Share #5 Posted September 24, 2010 It seems that the lens will screw off if you turn it counter clockwise.
fotografr Posted September 24, 2010 Share #6 Posted September 24, 2010 I got sensor dust in my "sealed" Panasonic LX1. I don't think it's possible to completely seal out all dust unless someone comes up with a way to keep the sensor in a vacuum. It seems that the lens will screw off if you turn it counter clockwise. Does that mean the X1 qualifies as a screw mount Leica?
nippa Posted September 24, 2010 Share #7 Posted September 24, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) The Canon G series used to get "dust" from the plastic telescoping lens assembly. Let's hope it doesn't happen to us with our aluminium barrel:)
brill64 Posted September 24, 2010 Share #8 Posted September 24, 2010 the outer ring, which mysteriously unscrews is certainly metal but not so sure about the telescoping lens barrel (which btw does not feel cool to the touch when coming from a cool to a warm environment). my feeling is it could be plastic. will mark norton have a go at turning it counter clockwise, please? What I think is Leica probably made the X1 expecting to market different versions with different lenses on it. There may be a 50mm next time. The "Screw mount" barrel (haha) makes that easy without any additional cost of doing a totally different body altogether. But seems they sell so much of it (by their expectations) they couldnt be bothered to release another model? Limited Editions do not require any effort at engineering and makes more money. RockyIII Posted September 27, 2010 Author Share #10 Posted September 27, 2010 Thanks for the replies. I ordered an X1 but have not received it yet. Hopefully, I will never have to send it in for service just to have the sensor cleaned. Rocky
jankap Posted September 27, 2010 Share #11 Posted September 27, 2010 Screwmount and electric control of the shutter, the fstop, etc? Jan
earleygallery Posted September 28, 2010 Share #12 Posted September 28, 2010 The X1 lens will be attached to the sensor unit, it won't just unscrew! I've had a few digicams with collapsing type lenses and all have dust on the sensor after a while - and apart from sending it in for 'repair' there's nothing you can do about it. If the X1 had a proper fixed lens dust would be much less likely to work through to the sensor. Everytime that lens zooms in and out of position it's sucking dust into the mechanism. RockyIII Posted September 29, 2010 Author Share #13 Posted September 29, 2010 Everytime that lens zooms in and out of position it's sucking dust into the mechanism. I have not seen a cross section diagram of the lens, but perhaps the rear element is stationary and there is a seal between it and the sensor chamber? JeTexas Posted September 29, 2010 Share #14 Posted September 29, 2010 I suggest everyone shoots with a condom over the lens at all times -- just to be safe.
