Advertisement Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Hi PasMichiel, Take a look here Is that a prototype M10 model in front of the M9 S.E.?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Nick_Yoon Posted September 22, 2010 Share #2 Posted September 22, 2010 Thought that myself. but they're rejected design models for the M9T. You can read about this in a design document download from the official site.
rosuna Posted September 22, 2010 Share #3 Posted September 22, 2010 The black one? It is much prettier and more elegant than the final (titanium) version.
Rick Posted September 22, 2010 Share #4 Posted September 22, 2010 I like the black one too but, just a small design problem... no hot shoe... details, details.
jaapv Posted September 22, 2010 Share #5 Posted September 22, 2010 It has optical viewfinder illumination. It looks rather nice btw. There is a chrome one at the back too. Inlaid black. Not bad.
rosuna Posted September 22, 2010 Share #6 Posted September 22, 2010 At the end of this video de Silva says "I hope and I am convinced that in few months... or year... we can also... again to present some new products". So he is involved in the design of something new... .
rosuna Posted September 22, 2010 Share #7 Posted September 22, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) The top plate of those prototypes are different. They don't seem to be one-piece of molded brass anymore. It seems like a full magnesium wall plus a flat ceiling on top (look at the black model or the white and black model at the back of the picture). Maybe lighter, easier to manipulate for manufacturing or repair, more durable finish... but more exposed to water, dust, etc...
rosuna Posted September 22, 2010 Share #8 Posted September 22, 2010 Look at this document: http://en.leica-camera.com/assets/file/download.php?filename=file_5080.pdf Early concept cameras do not have hot shoe. The more I see those concept prototypes, the more I like them. The concept 1 is simple and beautiful. It is like the current M9, but with more curved angles. The concept 2 and 5 have that different top plate design. I don't like concept 4, but concept 3 is similar to the final camera, and I like how the "grip" problem has been solved. The only thing I don't like at all in de Silva's camera is the right side, that protuberance at the right side of the viewfinder window. There are many ideas behind the M9 Ti. It is pure design but not only aesthetics. Ergonomics is being revised. And Leica is working in something new... They have said nothing regarding the guts of the new camera (sensor, processor, viewfinder, etc.), but next saturday we will know more.
mhoersch Posted September 22, 2010 Share #9 Posted September 22, 2010 ...but next saturday we will know more. Hadn't we better start placing our orders now?
PasMichiel Posted September 22, 2010 Author Share #10 Posted September 22, 2010 It has optical viewfinder illumination. It looks rather nice btw. There is a chrome one at the back too. Inlaid black. Not bad. I do like the curves indeed and the inlaid part. I think it's easier to wipe of dirt near the timewheel. I do miss the M9 retro detail: that little corner chopped off. jaapv Posted September 22, 2010 Share #11 Posted September 22, 2010 Somehow it is a bit reminiscent of the RD1. Smart move by Leica this - first show a model that one can be sure will be rejected by he core customer base and combine it with sneak preview of a nicer prototype, and prevent all negative reaction by traditionalists at the real introduction Notice that lens btw? A new 28? Saving-up time?

Does that inlaid top plate idea look a cheaper option than a milled brass one?
jaapv Posted September 22, 2010 Share #13 Posted September 22, 2010 High-grade plastic is not cheaper than brass. I was surprised at the introduction of the M8 that the same material as the R9 was not used.
rosuna Posted September 22, 2010 Share #14 Posted September 22, 2010 The S2 top plate is made of... high-grade plastic? Magnesium alloy?
Stealth3kpl Posted September 22, 2010 Share #15 Posted September 22, 2010 I'm sure I've seen that sloping top plate junction on some Leica Literature recently. Fingers crossed. Pete
wattsy Posted September 22, 2010 Share #16 Posted September 22, 2010 Notice that lens btw? A new 28? Saving-up time? It's a 21 Elmarit. This PDF brochure shows these mock-ups much more clearly - and they all look pretty hideous.
jaapv Posted September 22, 2010 Share #17 Posted September 22, 2010 Thanks Ian:) I must confess I would not mind #5, but some of them - I agree - yuk!
adli Posted September 22, 2010 Share #18 Posted September 22, 2010 Thought that myself. but they're rejected design models for the M9T. You can read about this in a design document download from the official site. But even if they are mock-ups from the M9T design, the can give a hint of what to expect from the M series in the future. jaapv Posted September 22, 2010 Share #19 Posted September 22, 2010 And why would Leica show rejected designs, if they did not want to trigger a response?
bocaburger Posted September 22, 2010 Share #20 Posted September 22, 2010 To me the body designs evoke some of Hexar RF and Contax G1/G2. Both had solid shutter buttons (no cable release threads), and the Contax had the slope from the lower to higher step on the top plate.
