mikel cumiskey Posted August 5, 2010 Share #1 Posted August 5, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) so i am a student, , recently bought an m8 body and have been grabbing some cheap lenses here and there in order to use the camera (i know leica lenses are a must, thank you thank you, but im on a student budget) - i got a 28mm cosinon lens - Screw Mount - in the mail today and it does not fit, do i need a converter or attachement? i have a russian lens and the correct attachement for that lens but it seems like the similarly made screw mount on that lens is a slightly smaller diameter. the specs - on the lens AUTO MC F=2.8 N0.778213 COSINON If anyone out there has any helpful information that would be awesome. thanks a bunch in advance. \mikel
Advertisement Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 Hi mikel cumiskey, Take a look here problemo. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
AlanG Posted August 5, 2010 Share #2 Posted August 5, 2010 If you have a Pentax thread mount camera, you can use it on it. The Auto diaphragm is a pretty good clue.
mikel cumiskey Posted August 5, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted August 5, 2010 but as far as using it on the m8 itself? no go? by the way i don't even know what auto diaphragm is off the top of my head without looking it up, i am "that" type of person asking this question.......... khiromu Posted August 5, 2010 Share #4 Posted August 5, 2010 Leica used to use screw mount, which is 39mm thread. But Pentax also used to use screw mount, which is 42mm thread. If what you have is M42 lens, then you cannot use it with Leica-M (I believe).
luigi bertolotti Posted August 5, 2010 Share #5 Posted August 5, 2010 If it is a 42mm screw mount... it, by sure, is made for reflex cameras, much thickier than Leicas, having the mirror box, so you should need an adapter which is rather bulky... in some way you could find one : there are adapters for M42 to Leica 39 screw (not so easy to find), then adapters for Leica 39 screw to Leica M (very common)... combining the two you can mount a M42 lens onto M8, of course to be focused by estimate... but my idea is that is better to forget about: if you want a good and rather cheap 28mm for your M8, there is a fine Cosina Voigtlander 28 mm 3,5... and sometime even some used item of it is offered for sale. jaapv Posted August 5, 2010 Share #6 Posted August 5, 2010 I think Novoflex would have such an adapter, or could make it. But the price would exceed a nice used lens. If you really want to go cheap get a Russian lens (Jupiter for instance) with an adapter.
earleygallery Posted August 5, 2010 Share #7 Posted August 5, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Your M8 has the Leica M mount. Pre M cameras, the LTM or Leica Thread Mount cameras had a 39mm thread mount. Pentax and many many others used a 42mm thread mount - which is what your lens is. Sell it back on e bay and buy a 39mm thread mount lens and a thread to M adaptor (there are different versions for different lenses, simply to bring up the correct frame lines). As suggested the cheaper lenses will be old Russian ones for the Zorki cameras, but they can be quite good optics if you get a nice one, but it's a bit of pot luck. Better by miles, get a Voigtlander lens. Also older Leica lenses like a 5cm or 9cm Elmar are excellent value. There are others too but not so easy to find like Canon 39mm lenses. wlaidlaw Posted August 5, 2010 Share #8 Posted August 5, 2010 What I think you need is the up to date version of the adapter in the photo below, being used on a Zenitar 16mm Fish-Eye lens. It is available here ELEFOTO Wilson
jaapv Posted August 5, 2010 Share #9 Posted August 5, 2010 Wilson, why did you sharpie the "made in russia" out?
wlaidlaw Posted August 5, 2010 Share #10 Posted August 5, 2010 Small additional bit of info on this adapter. If the M42 lens you are using is auto aperture only like the Zenitar lens, unless Elephoto have updated the adapter, you make need to make something to depress the auto aperture pin on the rear of the lens. I used a small half oval cut out of old hard rubber belting, so that it was curved and fixed this into the adapter with thin double sided adhesive tape. Now as you screw the M42 lens into the adapter, it depresses the auto pin. Wilson
wlaidlaw Posted August 5, 2010 Share #11 Posted August 5, 2010 Wilson, why did you sharpie the "made in russia" out? Don't know. It was like this when I bought it second hand at Hailsham Camera exchange. I presume previous owner was ashamed of carrying around a "made in Russia" lens. It is some sort of paint as it does not dissolve. Wilson

mikel cumiskey Posted August 6, 2010 Author Share #13 Posted August 6, 2010 in looking at the jupiter 35mm lenses i am wondering if the JUPITER 12 is what i am going for? it seems like it has additional "lens material" that protrudes from the rear of the lens. its m39. is this what i should be in the market for? please let me know if i am on the right track. m;)
earleygallery Posted August 6, 2010 Share #14 Posted August 6, 2010 Yes, it's a copy of a Zeiss design. Variable quality but for the price its worth taking a chance with one.
wlaidlaw Posted August 6, 2010 Share #15 Posted August 6, 2010 Be careful on Jupiters as many of them are in Contax mount not LTM39 (Contax mount will have an odd small bayonet at the rear). To use these on an M9, you will need the excellent but quite expensive Amadeo Muscelli adapter. I use one of these to mount my Zeiss Opton Sonnar 50/1.5. Contax bayonet will look like this below. Sorry about odd photo - don't know what has happened on this one. Wilson
