I have some problemes with the link to the thread?

 

I would like to revive the Many Eyes project and suggest the following (rules updated on 3 Aug 10, see underscored text):

 

1. The prerequisites are:

 

a. A Leica body and lens must be used.

 

 

b. You must post your pix in the picture thread. -- Post up to 3 of your best pix, here: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-...re-thread.html (you will be allowed to change your choices) Note: this book is not judged. – submit work you want to see in print!

 

 

3. I would edit the book in the same format as last time – UNLESS people want changes. For example, there were no page numbers. If you want page numbers, either the picture must be smaller on the page, or we should use the 11x14 book size. In the first case, the pix will be smaller; in the second, the book will cost more.

 

 

4. After we gather pix, I’ll solicit info for the hi-res pix and the appendix details.

 

Please make suggestions. For example, I think we should keep the “Many Eyes” portion of the title.

 

Maybe we can get this done for the end of the year.

The first copy of the book had light horizontal tram lines running through all the photo's, this was solved in the second copy by printing it soft - almost blurred!

 

So now I have two LUF books that are so embarrassingly weak that I'm not showing them to anyone.

 

Blurb customer support were great, they replaced the first book without question, and would probably replace the second book as well if I wanted, but I don't think they are capable of printing to a standard that I think is acceptable, and I don't want 3 bad books.

Are you talking about the LUF Charity Book we have just done?

 

None of the copies I have seen (and I've probably seen more than most people) have had a problem with the printing, and this is the first complaint I have heard re the quality.

I've got the LUF book and purchased 5 copies of the first Many Eyes book. All were printed well with excellent color definition and saturation.

 

I think you should have Blurb replace your second copy.

Pete, sousnds good to me, as well. It will double the cost of the book, tho.

 

If I cut off the entries in time to use premium paper (no more then 160 pages) that would add another $15, say. I believe that is optional by the order.

 

Has anyone seen a blurb book with the premium paper?

Andy - Yes, the LUF Charity book.

 

Everyone seemed to be happy with it, so I didn't want to bring the party down by expressing my disappointment.

 

Maybe I got two bad print runs?

 

Maybe I was expecting too much - though I doubt it because I could do better prints on my old un-calibrated G4 laptop and crappy desktop printer, and I am rubbish at digital printing.

 

On the bright side, I have a rare collectors item: A book of Leica photographs where every shot is dull, flat, lifeless, and lacking in both subtlety and sharpness.

 

This is not about dissing Blurb and the like though, what they do IS fantastic,

but I would prefer to take a step or two up the quality ladder.

Get them to redo the book until it's right. It cost you sixty five quid. If you could print better on your crappy printer then you must have a really bad copy, as mine isn't like that at all. We have had many compliments on the quality of the book as well as its contents including from David Bell at Leica UK who was particularly complimentary yesterday.

 

Like I said, that's the first complaint we have had in over 200 copies.

 

We were not able to use the best quality paper at Blurb because of the number of photographs in the book. Next time (if we use them again) there will be fewer.

 

If you know of an on-line printer that offers a better service, in better quality than Blurb, has better software and also has a charitable section that gives additional contribution to the charity from their own takings, and charges a similar fee for doing so, we would be delighted to know about it. Thanks.

One one more question... I did two blurb books... several years ago... and was ultimatly very pleased with both. I did a trial print for both books and found that they were too dark in the dark areas and the color was slightly over-saturated... if I remember correctly. I adjusted my images and reprinted and the results were very satisfying. This to say that I needed a trial run.

 

Do you have any guidance for how the images should be prepared for Blurb? Things may have changed with Blurb.

With the previous Many Eyes I found my images a bit on the dark side. I processed a bit lighter for "19 Leica Users" ( Edited by forum member Hoppyman, highly recommended!) ( a slight case of self-promotion ) and got them spot-on. Other contributors to that book felt need to correct the proof version.

I might get round to it eventually, but Blurb's answer to the first print problem

(to print it very soft so the fine lines were filled in) doesn't fill me with optimism.

They'll probably just sharpen the blurred one and I'll end up with 3 useless books!

 

Back on topic - If you decide to go with Blurb I'll still submit something, but if any are chosen I probably won't, will, will not, buy a copy. will, not ...
