ldhrads Posted July 21, 2010 Share #1 Posted July 21, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I unexpectedly went from an M8.2 to a M9 overnight a few weeks ago:). When I did it I said I'd sell the M8.2 to recover some of what I put into the M9. I posted the M8.2 here and have since reduced the price, no bites yet. Honestly I realize that I don't "need" to sell the M8.2 it's only a year old and is obviously a great camera. If it sells at this point I'll be happy, but part of me is telling me to keep it. If you had a M8 or M8.2 when you got the M9 did you keep it? If so do you use it as you expected? Like to hear your thoughts!!!

Rick Posted July 21, 2010 Share #3 Posted July 21, 2010 ldhrads, hello from across the country. I found that I was not using my M8.u at all once I got the M9. I initially thought I'd keep it. But, after a couple of weeks I realized that the M9 was better. I'd always use the M9 and wouldn't even carry the M8.u as a second camera with a different focal length lens. As, I am not a professional (thank God), I don't have a need to rapidly change cameras so, I found that I prefer to just switch lenses on the much better M9 and forgo the extra weight of carrying two cameras. Secondly, I thought of keeping it as a back up when the M9 goes down, maybe for travel. But, I have other cameras that travel with me and although it would be nice to continue using my Leica glass if the M9 died, I just figured I'd fall back on another camera. Lastly, I plan on buying an M10 and then I will keep the M9 as a back up. I believe the M9 is that good; being FF and no IR/UV filter needed it could match the M10 much better than the M8 matches the M9, for me. I just don't view the M8 as a long term back up choice. I think the M9 will fit that role much better when the time comes. I sold mine about 6 weeks ago and got $3K for it and I thought that was significant for me. Hope my point of view helps. Rick Posted July 21, 2010 Share #7 Posted July 21, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) LDH, I sold it on ebay for $2,999 on an auction with a minimum of $2,400. I had 3-4 people bidding and I had no selling history. Chris, I would think that two M9's would work out well. I don't think I would like trying to use an M9 and M8 together if, I was shooting like you. Yanidel, my wife used a 5D2 and switched to my M8 for a while (when I got the M9) and liked the size but ended up getting a GF1. Then, she decided she liked the GF1 for most of the things she wanted a camera for and learned enough about the M8 that she figured she could use the M9 when she needed that amount of file quality. I was happy when my wife got the 5D2 because I figured I'd use it a lot as well with my M8. But, I actually almost never ended up using the 5D2 and once I got the M9 I didn't see myself using the 5D2 except for very specific things. It would have been nice to keep but, I just don't take enough pictures to justify it and I really needed to buy a longer lens for it as well as the 28-70/2.8 that we had. So, we sold it. She has shot the M9 a few times now and is getting used to it. She now wants to try my lenses on the GF1 with an adaptor. I can already see where this is going, two M9's and the GF1 or maybe the new Sony.
ldhrads Posted July 21, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted July 21, 2010 Sure, my daughter would love to have it, but at 16 she's just not ready to go from point and shoot (crush resistant water resistant) to Leica. She's tried it a few times, but not fast enough for her. She and my wife can fight over my Olympus DSLR. I've had my M8.2 here for a few weeks, just lowered the price and figured out how many shutter trips it's had (2420) I'll post it on eBay this week and it will go I'm sure!!! michali Posted July 21, 2010 Share #9 Posted July 21, 2010 Got rid of both of mine - I use two M9s. +1 I initially tried the M9 with M8 & M8.2 as back up. I eventually got tired of juggling lenses & UV/IR filters on & off. So I bit the bullet and bought a second M9, couldn't be happier. I traded both M8 & M8.2 on the second M9 and paid in the difference.
Jamie Roberts Posted July 21, 2010 Share #10 Posted July 21, 2010 I have my M8 as a backup right now--because it's perfect paired with a 28 Cron--but I'm at the point that if I could find it a good home at a reasonable price, I would probably get rid of it and my R9/DMR for another M9. I do love the M9
ldhrads Posted July 22, 2010 Author Share #11 Posted July 22, 2010 After 2 weeks for sale here, My M8.2 went for $3000 buy it now in 10 minutes on eBay!!! Wife's happy lol
Bill W Posted July 22, 2010 Share #12 Posted July 22, 2010 I sold my M8.2 on ebay for $3,750 about four months ago in order to fund part of my M9. I had actually sold it several months before but the buyer claimed there was an issue with the leds' in the viewfinder so returend it and I sent it to Leica NJ under warranty. They fixed it and I actually got more the 2nd time it sold on ebay. That was good because I was out some shipping cost.
ldhrads Posted July 22, 2010 Author Share #13 Posted July 22, 2010 as fast as it sold, I probably could have gotten a few hundred more, but at this point it's sold and I"m happy especially with people talking about the M8 market softening.
erl Posted July 23, 2010 Share #14 Posted July 23, 2010 Being lazy about some things, I left my two M8's 'hanging' around after acquiring my M9. I really needed to sell one as only one is needed for backup. Then, I had a serious accident with the M9 (nearly $4000 quoted damage). Biggest assignment for the year next month and no M9! Thank goodness I now still have a matched pair of M8's to work with. I am also down my favoured 75mm 'Cron which was included in the smash, but I can limp without it, I hope. So, keeping the two M8's has worked for me so far, but when the M9 returns from Solms, one will go.
johnbuckley Posted July 23, 2010 Share #15 Posted July 23, 2010 I trade my M8.2 in to get my M9, but kept my M8.u as a backup. Not a backup as in I'll use it as a second camera with my M9. A backup as in, if my M9 had to go to Solms Hospital, I'd still be using Leica glass. It's a luxurious insurance policy, that (currently) unused M8 is...
