LuxBob Posted July 11, 2010 Share #1 Posted July 11, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Apologies if this is a member but this sale doesn't ring true. 1. Seller has no previous sales. 2. Camera and lens but odd description 3. Cannot see numbers. 4. Minimal description with clunky English. 5. One day sale. 6. Prefers cash on collection (but Paypal offered). Anybody else as suspicious as me? Leica M8 Digital Camera on eBay (end time 11-Jul-10 23:23:12 BST)
Advertisement Posted July 11, 2010 Posted July 11, 2010 Hi LuxBob, Take a look here Strange M8 sale on Ebay UK. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted July 11, 2010 Share #2 Posted July 11, 2010 It looks dodgy, but if it really was a scam I wouldn't expect it to only be available in the UK, and payment on collection possible - though that may just be the scammers trying to make it look less of a scam. The duration is the odd thing, why would you sell something so expensive on a three day auction.
andybarton Posted July 11, 2010 Share #3 Posted July 11, 2010 I have asked some questions of the seller. £9.50 1st Class Royal Mail postage?
stunsworth Posted July 11, 2010 Share #4 Posted July 11, 2010 £9.50 1st Class Royal Mail postage? Without insurance, that's about right.
k_g_wolf ✝ Posted July 11, 2010 Share #5 Posted July 11, 2010 There were two false M9-auctions as well on Ebay_UK within the last few days. One finished by Ebay a day after completion, the other one before the end of the auction. Crooks like LIECA. Best regards GEORG
250swb Posted July 11, 2010 Share #6 Posted July 11, 2010 I'm not sure about this one. I tend to think it may be OK. I mean everybody who joins has to have a first Ebay auction at some time or other, and with first auctions people don't get it right, hence the one day sale, hence the brief description, hence the postage price. Its so bad an auction it can't be intentional or dubious, can it? But the guy needs a tutorial in how not to look dodgy. What gets my antenna going are those with ten or twenty sales under their belt, all for a really cheap CD or something, and then a high price item goes on. k_g_wolf ✝ Posted July 11, 2010 Share #7 Posted July 11, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I think you are right, Steve. This seems to be a different story. Otherwise there wouldn´t be an option to get the items personally. Best GEORG
chrism Posted July 11, 2010 Share #8 Posted July 11, 2010 "With lens as shown in the pictures" Looks like a 50 Lux to me, which is, condition being good, probably worth more than the M8. Chris
wattsy Posted July 11, 2010 Share #9 Posted July 11, 2010 Cash on collection isn't necessarily a sign that the auction is legit - it also provides another method of relieving the unwary of their cash. That said, I'd be less concerned about being directly ripped-off than I would be about the provenance of the camera and lens.
gravastar Posted July 11, 2010 Share #10 Posted July 11, 2010 ........................ That said, I'd be less concerned about being directly ripped-off than I would be about the provenance of the camera and lens. The key question is "Does it come with the charger?" That's not mentioned in the listing. The other items (except the M8 and Canon lens) for auction like the cakes are on a much longer listing time. On the other auctions the seller states "I am a florist & confectioner". Bob.
gverdon Posted July 11, 2010 Share #11 Posted July 11, 2010 (...)4. Minimal description with clunky English. Anybody else as suspicious as me? spylaw4 Posted July 11, 2010 Share #12 Posted July 11, 2010 Maybe English is not the sellers first language?
earleygallery Posted July 11, 2010 Share #13 Posted July 11, 2010 I'm in Croydon, maybe I should bid if it's going cheap!
AlbertoDeRoma Posted July 11, 2010 Share #14 Posted July 11, 2010 Best case scenario (realistically speaking), you will get your hands on a stolen camera (no accessories, box, etc.) Most likely scenario, you'll be out a bunch of quids and have no camera. Worst case scenario, you show up for the camera, you are robbed of the cash and beaten up. Bottom line, this kind of auctions from eBay users with zero feedback are scams 99.99% of the time. I'd steer clear of it. Alberto
LuxBob Posted July 11, 2010 Author Share #15 Posted July 11, 2010 Wow... you just created a new whole set of anti-terrorist clever ways to incriminate... Cheers, Gérald (usual clunky English writer) Sorry Gérald but I was not in any way trying to imply that he was not English more that his poor use of language was inconsistent with a person using a high quality camera. Alberto He's selling cakes in his other auctions! Its not the usual way to launder drugs money by any stretch of the imagination. Perhaps the camera is going to fund his new business? And lets face it, there are other people on the planet who don't give a cuss about cameras, even if they have the Holy Grail sat in their lap. wilfredo Posted July 11, 2010 Share #17 Posted July 11, 2010 Ask the seller if he is willing to meet you at the local police station for the exchange? This is a fantastic deal if legitimate.
andybarton Posted July 11, 2010 Share #18 Posted July 11, 2010 The seller hasn't responded to my queries. Surprise, surprise.
stunsworth Posted July 11, 2010 Share #19 Posted July 11, 2010 It finished at 1550 GBP. If it's legit then someone has a bargain. On the other hand if it's not...
earleygallery Posted July 12, 2010 Share #20 Posted July 12, 2010 Bidder wasn't me! It will be interesting to check the feedback in a few days......... Another 'odd' thing is that the camera and lens are shown separately like that, it would be normal to have the lens on the camera.
