Consider yourself counted. As for a hugyfot, could come in handy - you never know. It would make for an interesting perspective and as far as I know there is nothing in the rules that prevents you from submitting a photograph that was taken submerged.

I'm going to try and do something about this Venice trip as from tomorrow. ..

Would be real nice to see you guys again and the new faces too of course.

It would be great to have you in again.

Of course, the competition will be much tougher now ;)

Cheers

Stefan

If you want to use the vaporetto while in Venice, consider buying a 72 hour pass (or whatever suits you best)

A single vaporetto ride is €6.50 - a price that would make even London Underground blush...

If you buy online, before you go, you can get a 72 hour, unlimited journey pass, ofr only €28.

This is the link.

Venice Connected

You will need to add a return ticket for the airport -> city leg (another €22.50) as the 72 hour pass doesn't cover the airport too.

I ordered mine today and the transaction went very smoothly. Collect the tickets at the airport.

You can no doubt do the same if arriving by train.

Only if you're returning later than 72 hours from arrival. The vaporetti passes also cover the ACTV busses (NOT ATVO!), the #5 runs between Marco Polo airport and Piazzale Roma (car park) vaporetto dock 4x/hr. If you are staying longer than 72 hrs, there's a 7-day pass. I think it's about 42 euros. That said, unless you're going to be using the vaporetti a full 4-5 days, it's more convenient and even a couple bucks (ah, euros) cheaper to get a shorter vaporetto pass and then take the Alilaguna ferry back to the airport. You have to carry your luggage up from the dock (not far) but avoid taking it on and off a bus in addition to the boat.

The 72 hour pass, for €28, does not cover the leg to or from the airport.

I would not consider arriving in the city any way other than by water, personally.

72H Public Transport Ticket

If you can enjoy the magic of Venice for three days, this is the ideal ticket for you.

You can get your ticket at any Venice Connected Point and it is valid for 72 hours from the time you get it.

This ticket can be used on the boat network and on Mestre and Lido buses.

Alilaguna Airport Transfer Return Ticket

Direct transfer from the Marco Polo Airport to the city centre and return.

5 lines available with different routes. Please look at the map to see the line that better suites your needs.

By purchasing the one way ticket from the City Centre to the Airport and boarding on

Linea Rossa at the following boat stops: Hilton - Zattere - San Zaccaria - Arsenale - Lido - Murano

Or

Linea Blu: Hilton - San Zaccaria - Lido - Bacini - Ospedale - Fondamente Nuove - Murano

Or

Linea Arancio: Sant'Angelo - Rialto - Guglie - Orto

passengers need to withdraw tickets in advance at the following Alilaguna desks: Marco Polo Airport docks, San Marco, Venice Port.

In case passengers do not withdraw tickets in advance, there is no guarantee they will be admitted on board even if they have a valid voucher.

The other top tip, when either booking your plane seats, or using the mad scramble on budget airlines, is to sit on the right hand side of the plane.

In most cases, the planes arrive at Marco Polo from the west, then bank round. If you sit on the right, and the weather is fine (which it will be 14 - 18/10/10), then you get a fantastic view of the city from the air. Just fight your partner for the window seat...

I agree, a half-hour bus ride into Venice is something of a mood-killer :D

However, not meaning to be argumentative, but for the sake of accuracy and for anyone not sharing yours and my preference for water-only arrival and departure, I have to say that the VeniceConnected site is a little confusing/misleading. Having used the 72-hr pass a few times already, I can say with 100% confidence that it definitely does cover the #5 ACTV bus between Piazzale Roma and Marco Polo. The following is an excerpt from Tripadvisor.com:

Land route to Venice:

The ACTV n°5 bus is included in any of the ACTV travel passes*, and runs every quarter hour most of the day, and takes 22-25 minutes to reach Piazzale Roma (or vice versa) with limited stops along the route. It is an easily accessible, low rise bus adapted to travel with baggage, including internal luggage racks and one low step to enter, almost at curb level, and in absence of a pass costs €2.50 one way.

*ACTV runs the vaporetti service

  • 2 weeks later...

We can now move things on with regards to the meal on the Saturday (16th October)

I have negotiated a €28 per head meal at the Ristorante san Trovaso, located here. Their website is :: Taverna e Ristorante SanTrovaso - Venezia da Vivere :: and it is the restaurant, NOT the taverna that we are booking. That's very important - there are two establishments close together, run by the same family.

I have provisionally booked a table for 30 persons, but I am sure that we can squeeze that up if necessary.

Given the numbers, as for last year's meal in Malta, they will require us to order our food before we arrive. I have agreed a cut off date of 30th September with them, but I think that is a reasonable request. They have not mentioned a deposit, so, obviously, I haven't pushed it :)

The menu is below and downloadable from here:- Menù da 28 euro.pdf

Proposta menù da 28 euro a persona

Primo piatto:

- gnocchi alla rucola (gnocchi with rocket salad and cream sauce)

- pasta alla carbonara (pasta with beaten eggs, bacon and cream)

- lasagne di ricotta e spinaci (lasagne with ricotta and spinach -
minimum 10 orders
)

- risotto con salsiccia e porcini (risotto with sausage and mushroom)

Secondo piatto:

- fegato alla veneziana (calf’s liver with onions)

- ossobuco alla cacciatora (veal shank with mushrooms)

- petto di pollo alla rucola (breast of chicken with rocket sauce)

- spezzatino di manzo (beef stew)

Contorno:

- contorno del giorno (vegetables of the day)

Dessert:

- dessert

Acqua:

- ½ litro

Il vino non è compreso (wine is not included): ¼ vino: + €2.50

If you are vegetarian, vegan, celiac or anything else that precludes you from eating anything above, please let me know ASAP and I will try to sort alternatives out for you.

The only proviso with the above is that they will need a minimum of 10 orders for the lasagne starter. Obviously not a problem if there are enough of us who want that choice, but, just in case, if you do want the lasagne, please also offer a second choice, just in case.

Please place your orders in this thread and I will keep a spreadsheet to remind you of what you have ordered when we get there... ;)

Any questions, please ask. Ann and I have eaten here twice before and would gladly eat here again every evening we are in Venice. 28€ is pretty reasonable for a three course meal in Venice and is in line with previous meals that we have taken on One Challenges over the years.
