Today whilst shooting I noticed this image in my play back screen !

It can not be the card and is not the lightroom 2

As you can see from the photo, it has been split in two, the left side of the photo is on the right side and is all so colour magenta, estrange.

Your thoughts please,

with many thanks in advance

warm regards

Why do you feel it cannot be the card? Have you replicated the effect on two different cards by different manufacturers?

I would certainly look at the card as part of my differential diagnosis.

+1. If it were the sensor, the picture would have been exactly split through the middle

As we trust there was no crop done on the original picture, there is a faulty card involved, without a doubt.

Thank yo and everyone else for your answer.

In fact when I look at the play back screen, at first I do not see the image,I only see the file number.

So, I go to the photo before and enlarge the photo and and then this image appears in the place of the photo before.

I am no expert in this matter and if it looks as though it is the card I can change this.

next week I have a job with a client, i think if it is just the card fine, I can change this, if it is not and I take the risk, whilst working this will be a very expensive day for me.

So if anybody has had the same problem and they are sure it is the card, please let me know.

warm regards

So how is your French, Bill, Or your Dutch :D ?

This is an International Forum: some respect and leeway for non-English speakers, and for them taking trouble to translate from their native language is appreciated

Or should we all become completely Anglicised and write perfect English? Do they in the UK?

I had the same problem.

After contacting customers service in Solms I send them the files and all information regarding card used e.t.c.

This was mid April and a few days after they wrote back asking some complementary questions.

Since then I have heard nothing:mad:

The pictures looked like this:

Erik, thank you, Tell me has this happen since?

It happened after approx 800 shots, two pics after each other and has not occurred since then.

Card was a SanDisk, 4GB, SDHC, C2 and I have not used it since waiting for the answer from Leica customer service.

I'm still waiting!

Have you chased them up?

Last contact was approx one month ago.

I had to send the original files on a CD as they could not receive files that large by mail.

After that I received the following answer on May 20th:

Dear Mr. Thomsen,

Thanks for the CD.

Our quality department ist still looking for the fault.

Please d´n´t use the memory card with these pictures on at the moment!

I´ll tell you about the problem as soon as I´ll get news from my colleagues.

Do the basic's first. Never just delete images, always reformat the card in the camera to fully clear the card.

But seeing the file number and not the image can occur if you downloaded to something like Lightroom which could be adding processing information to the .xmp files and then you put the card back in the camera and the file won't be recognised as coming from the camera.

steve thank you,

This has remind me the start of the day. I do a test photo in order to get the WB correct for the condition of the day, when I am happy with the results of the WB, I then delete the photo and carry on taking photo.

So I try too delete my test photo in the camera but this does not happen, the test photo still appears in the play back screen, So I repeat 3 or 4 times, but still the same photo. Now I format the card in the camera and the photo goes away.

Steve when i talk about see the file number in the camera, this is before I down load the photos, I see the number whilst on the street and also this "split screen" photo, the problem occurs whilst shooting on the street.

When down loading the photos in lightroom, I can not recoup 3 photos which have been taken after this "split screen" photo, The SD extreme III card has always been in the camera and like Eric I will keep the photos for my dealer, he can look at them next week!

The split images above is definitely due to data corruption and not a sensor problem. Whether it's the memory card or a firmware problem, this can be up for debate, but it's definitely something to do with the way the data was recorded/read from the card.

As with all binary data files, there is usually a start and end byte(s) that tells a reader (whether it's the camera or raw converter) that after a certain set of data bits, the data begins and then at the end of the file, there is another set of data bits that tell the software where the file ends. If for some reason the middle part which actually contains the file got corrupted (eg. some memory blocks were either missing or damaged), the data bits will get shifted, thereby causing the colour channels to be misaligned.

Normally if the file reader (eg. camera or raw converter) performs a CRC check once it finishes the reading process, it should notice if a file is corrupted or not. However, if a CRC check is not performed, the file could slip through and be processed with shifted data bits in the middle.

There is a very slim but not completely impossible chance that the data could have been corrupted somewhere between the in-camera raw data processing and the file writing to card. In this scenario, the CRC check would not help since the data was already corrupted before being written to card. If this was the case however, I'm not sure if it would produce a split image.

The best advice I can give is to try a different memory card from a reliable manufacturer (eg. Kingston, Lexar, Sandisk). Note that there are also lots of counterfeit name-brand memory cards floating around so it's best to buy these memory cards from an established retailer.

Its the battery. If the battery runs down to certain point or you have a faulty connection you can get an incomplete write to the card. Have had this exact problem with the DMR and the M8.2 ..you can look at the data on the card and see the issue.
