Adobe has released Lightroom 3; has someone downloaded this new version?

I just downloaded the Lightroom 3 Release... so far very good. I used the beta-versions since they came out. Today, after being notified that the beta will expire, I just decided to get the full version. Did not see anything special - compared to the beta version, but I've only used it for half an hour, since I installed it... Anyone with some news?

UPDATE:

I've just heard back from Leica Software Support. Apparently they weren't aware of the release of LR3. They advise that they are now trying to fix the problem so that those with a new camera / unused license number will be able to download the latest version from the Leica site.

Hope to hear from them soonish ... :)

Check how older images at high ISO's compare when you see them in the 2003 vs 2010 process. Go to the Develop > Calibrate tab to do this. If you're happy with this (I am) you can update all images in the archive to the most recent processing version.

For me it means that 1600 is fully competitive with the 5D2 noisewise + there's more sharpness because of the low filter + leica glass. I'm VERY happy.

I currently run LR 2.6 which I bought. If I upgrade to LR 3, either by buying the upgrade, or by using the disc which came with my M9 assuming that is possible, will the LR library transfer across automatically or do I have to start over again?

While I haven't yet upgraded my LR2.6.1. normally the new version will recognize and import the old catalogue without trouble. As always, it is recommended to backup your old catalogue first, just in case a corruption occurs!

That's not what was said above.

What was said was that those people who hadn't downloaded a previous copy of LR might get a copy of LR3 (subject to Leica completing their negotiations with Adobe)

There was no suggestion of those of you who have already taken advantage of the free download ALSO getting a free upgrade. AFAIK, Leica have never even hinted that this might be on offer.

Leica via Twitter responded to my question about LR 3 with the following:

@sctt on LR3 release: we´ll prepare something official but I would not download LR2 from our site now if I were a customer!

So it sounds like Leica will begin offering LR 3 licenses at some point. I just hope it's before another 30 days. ;)

I received an email from David Elwell of Leica USA today with two important pieces of information. First, Leica USA is waiting to hear back from Leica Germany about the agreements between Leica and Adobe.

Second, he put my name on a contact list for information/instructions when it becomes available. So if you are interested in being in the loop directly with Leica, you might want to contact him through the Leica web site (I am purposely not publishing his email address, but it is on the Leica web site).

In the meantime, I have converted to LR3 by simply downloading and installing the fully functional 30-day trial. It appears that the only difference between the trial and the actual software is a nag screen each time you open the trial asking if you want to buy the software. I did leave LR2 on the my system for the time being.

A backup is always recommended, but the conversion process just creates a completely new catalogue and imports the old data. The old catalogue is left untouched. The new catalogue has the same name as the old one but the letter "2" is appended.

:eek:This is the sort of things that sometimes makes you wonder whether Solms is actually located on Planet Earth...

Hi,

I just wish it was possible to purchase a upgrade. I tried to Adobe web, but get an error message stating that I already have an account in another country. The support is non-existing, and there seems to be no way to delete my account.

So much for Adobe!

It does sound like a canned answer, but to be fair it is not like Adobe had set a clear release date in advance. I certainly did not hear about any release until the day it happened.

What are the (REAL BENEFITS) of upgrading Lightroom 3? I haven't seen any discussion about this. Does it improve upon reading and generating a better RAW file than LR 2.7? No I think not, does it offer better speed in opening raw files?, maybe a little bit faster? But is it really going to make a substantial difference in someones work flow? not really, because I would think? that a pro would be using its big brother? wouldn't you? So who cares?, I certainly don't. What about the current adjustment features? have those change dramatically? I don't think so? maybe a little bit faster in speed? My point is this I personally am only interested in a better algorithm that is written specifically for opening up X1 files that do not over process as discussed in another thread, concerning blown highlights. I hope I said that rite?

Anyways it is not Leicas fault that Adobe has come out with this upgrade at this time, however it is Leica's moral responsibility too appeal to and negotiate with Adobe too correct and add the new upgrade to current buyers of (all) Leica systems sold with LR 2, only, lets say 60 days prior to its (NEW RELEASE) would be reasonable, I would think? Then theirs the issue of people who have used there lic's #'s (IN THAT PERIOD) what about them? the guy's who received there X1's or M9's 3 days before the new release and now what happens to them are they stuck? with LR 2.7 ? We will soon see. Just my 2 cents :D

Oh - come on Marty... Chris indicated he spoke to Leica SW Support.

It's like calling Dell Support to get an upgrade on the day Windows 7 was officially introduced and speaking to someone who thinks XP or Vista are still flavour of the day!

I once worked in a similar environment, for a company that sold products that included 3rd party SW components subject to regular upgrades.

In such Planet Earth-based *normal* companies, Support would (a) know the release date (because they need to answer client queries as soon as the upgrade is available) and (B) know everything about the applicable upgrade policy (which would have previously been defined together by Sales and some kind of "Technical Partners Relationship Manager").
