Advertisement Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 Hi Rotwang, Take a look here Leica Hektor 7,3cm M39. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Rotwang Posted June 2, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted June 2, 2010 Oh sorry, I continue in English of course. Here there is the possibility to enter the serial number and to receive the production date. But even here there was no answer. So once again: Why do the official sites (incl. standard google search) talk about serial numbers for lenses beginning from 100'000 and this one is 96xxx? Do someone know a good internet side or has an answer for it? Best regards Rotwang

luigi bertolotti Posted June 2, 2010 Share #5 Posted June 2, 2010 No, Leitz lenses' serial numbers began notoriously before 100.000, and Hektor 7,3 is one of the typical lenses which can (not often) be found with such numbers: Hektor 5 cm 2,5 and "Fat" Elmar 9 cm also exist numbered under 100.000 (but I never saw numbers below 94.000, I seem to remember). I haven't ever read precise statements about this question of numbering... but I can make this hipotesis : - First Leicas were fixed-lens - no reason to give a specific number to the lens in itself - First Leicas with interchangable lens were the so called "non-standard mount" - lenses had to be matched for the specific body, and the lenses were engraved with the last 3 numbers of the body - But, Leitz had built for years "non-Leica" lenses, sold for 3rd party plate cameras : surely they had a factory numbering... can be the the first lenses for the "Standard" Leica mount started from numbers which followed that numbering system. Un-numbered standard lenses also exist... I have an Elmar 13,5 and a "Fat" Elmar 9 of this kind.
adan Posted June 2, 2010 Share #6 Posted June 2, 2010 "Un-numbered standard lenses also exist... I have an Elmar 13,5 and a "Fat" Elmar 9 of this kind." According to Laney: Leica Collectors Guide - lenses without visible engraved serial numbers often have a number scratched on the inside of the barrel somewhere. Also (Ibid) lenses prior to the introduction of the standardized screw mount in 1931 were engraved with the same serial number (or the last 3 digits, as Luigi says) of the matched camera body - not an independent number. So lens numbers were still just a copy of camera numbers. Presumably at some point in 1931-32, Leica realized they needed a separate numbering sequence for LTM lenses (and keep a record of them), and picked up where the last "dedicated-to-camera" lens numbers left off - somewhere between about 60,000 and 100,000. The Hektor 7.3cm was introduced in 1931, and Leica was up to the 100,000 mark by 1933, which narrows the date window for this lens to (most likely) late 1931 or 1932. Which is about as close as one can get with any Leica numbering.

Zephyr Posted June 7, 2010 Share #18 Posted June 7, 2010 I can show you a Hektor lens from the same time with a N° 96 501 from my own collection. The glasses are very clean and the body has a nice patina. Welcome, dear visitor!
