ChiILX1 Posted May 23, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 23, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I went to Central Camera Company in Chicago and took a look at the handgrip- it is well made but is just one big piece of plastic. It interrupts the silver metal line on the bottom of the camera, unlike the M9 handgrip that at least tries to look like it's made for the camera. Anyone know an effective way of modifying the X1 handgrip to look like it's supposed to be on it? Paint? I have big hands but I am so reluctant to get the thing. Welcome, dear visitor! vicaf Posted May 24, 2010 Share #2 Posted May 24, 2010 The handgrip works and does it job very well, and enables the X1 to handle at a much higher level. Remember, you are not taking pictures of the camera, you are taking pictures with the camera.
Guest badbob Posted May 24, 2010 Share #3 Posted May 24, 2010 It definitely looks different with the handgrip, but it still looks good, like a Leica should.

vicaf Posted May 24, 2010 Share #5 Posted May 24, 2010 Huh? How so? The X1 still makes the same photos with or without a grip. Perhaps I was not clear enough - obviously the pictures are the same, but my emphasis was on the word "handle" - the camera feels better to many of us with the grip on, and enables us to more easily reach the moment of capture of the photo - Vic
johnastovall Posted May 24, 2010 Share #6 Posted May 24, 2010 I don't care for the look of the grip but need one for big hands. I got a Luigi half case with the built-in grip.

artyca Posted May 24, 2010 Share #8 Posted May 24, 2010 In my opinion, hand grips are only required if you're interested in one-handed photography. I'm using two hands to hold the X1 and have not had a need for a hand grip (yet!)
wda Posted May 24, 2010 Share #9 Posted May 24, 2010 My view has always been the same. Accessories are a very personal choice. I choose mine for functionality, not appearance. But I respect your concerns in this regard.

Guest Chris M Posted May 28, 2010 Share #11 Posted May 28, 2010 I'm 6'4" 245Lbs, I'm waiting on the my grip, my first day was just a bobbling event, I could not get a natural or comfortable hand grip around such a small camera. Mine is in root for delivery on 6/01. I also ordered a PLEO Dinosaur robot, too take video's and pictures of my Shar-Pei's curiosity towards it. can't wait. chris m. Driver8 Posted May 28, 2010 Share #12 Posted May 28, 2010 Does X1 Handgrip destroy the camera's look? I don't think it does. There are two other benefits to the handgrip besides better handling: (1) it protects the base of the camera and (2) when you take it off and on to replace the battery or memory card, the X1 sorta kinda feels like an M camera. I'm just getting my x1 but it's something that I'll probably know right away, I just wonder if buying the rip and then a case, maybe just get a Luigi case with built in grip? I found the handling of the camera to be ok, but grudgingly bought the grip for these reasons. I didn't like seeing the tacky 'base plate' and flimsy battery door cover. However, with the addition of a wrist strap, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the grip really does enable one-handed shooting. This is something I was not convinced was really possible with such a small camera and with such awkwardly placed controls (esp aperture dial and manual focus dial). Mscanel Posted May 28, 2010 Share #16 Posted May 28, 2010 I think the grip makes it look horrible. I am waiting for my X1 to ship.....becoming very annoying. But i plan on getting my hands on a grip and making a replica with an aluminum base to match the look and finish of the camera.

I know that you will definitely benefit from the grip. I chose the Leica grip (fore now), which might change latter?? over the fully loaded Luigi grip $400.00 plus $$ fore that one, instead I wanted a robot for (LESS) then the price of a Luigi grip. google PLEO WORLD and check it out, it pretty neat! I'm over 50 years old and look at me, I'm still a kid at heart. But knowing me, I love hand made to order, custom stuff so I'm sure the Luigi grip will come latter, I'll eat [vandecamps baked beans] for a month and will be able to afford a Luigi case (fully loaded) w/ tripod screw. Anyways I'm waiting for my Sony NEX 5 w/16mm lens too arrive next month. I had to pre order through Ritz Camera, my local dealers are not interested in it yet? Anyways glad you are getting the X1, it is a very nice leica camera. I've owned only Leics my whole life, however as I've stated in my other posts, my eyes are going and I can not focus through the rangefinder anymore, do to wet macular degeneration in both eyes, but really bad in what use to be my dominate eye. So (hence) the X1 ie; auto focus. You have a happy Memorial Day weekend, and be safe! best, chris m
earleygallery Posted May 28, 2010 Share #18 Posted May 28, 2010 Unless you're some supermodel I would suggest that wearing the X1 around your neck is more likely to ruin it's looks than a little handgrip
