Just to keep this thread in the M8 forum I thought I might throw a hand grenade in the room and ask if Leica will support this lens compatibility (firmware & filter wise) with the M8?...

Since it seems to be the same optical formula as the previous version (but with some moving elements), vignetting and cyan drift patterns will likely not change visibly. So it is possible Leica is just keeping the same 6-bit code used for the previous version. In which case M8 support is already there.

In the M9 menu list of lenses, Leica lumps together different lens versions (by catalog number) if the basic optics did not change substantially.

I guess we'll have to wait until someone actually takes delivery and can compare the 6-bit code on the new lens to the previous 35 f/1.4 ASPH.

If it were up to me, I'd have just recycled the old code. But I suppose some historica buffs would be upset if they could not tell 50 years from now whether a file was made with the 35 'lux ASPH (v.1) or (v.2). :)

When you look on the technical notes of the new lens on the Leica Homepage they give the different data which apply to the M8-crop for the lens, so there is no indication that they forgot the M8. Adan's assumption that it probably has the same coding as the "old" one is realistic as there aren't any differences in vignetting. Though Erwin Puts reported about a new coating to reduce flare, so this might leed to a different code.

To turn the thread again to M8-topics:

As Leica already proposed an update for the M8-firmware for May, we'll see if they apply a new code.

Who could say it any nicer? :)

Have a good long week-end!
