I like to carry notebooks, pens, batteries, filters etc in zipped pockets that don't let small things fall out, and its nice to have exterior pockets to carry water etc. The zipped pocket in the Hadley is not suitable for anything other than a notebook because anything knobbly sticks in you. And I always feel the Hadley is pretty well open house for pickpockets in crowds. I suppose ideally the Retro should be a 5 or 7.5 and not a 10 for an average Leica kit, but closely fitted bags can be very frustrating to get at things quickly.

Yup, i was looking for all that too, for travel and just a daily office bag that would hold my camera as well. But the Retro 10 was just too monstrous for my m9. Swallowed it up like Moby Dick swallowing up the old man and his boat. The same bag but about 1/2 to 2/3 as tall would have been better, although still too thick/fluffy for me if I'm being picky. I do like that lack of padding in the hadley and the fact that it doesn't stick out from my body very far. With the hadley pro i find that it can fit my macbook air (or a future ipad) in the main compartment behind the internal divider, along with minimal paperwork. I share your complaints about the pockets not being secure enough.

 

Alas, once again the "perfect" bag still goes unfound.

There is the Think Tank 'Change Up' bag that I have, its much more compact than the Hadley Pro (and smaller than the Retro 10) and does all the usual clever Think Tank stuff, but its a combined shoulder bag and/or waist pack. Its a bit small for me as a day bag, but fits body a body and three or four lenses. I use it when I might need to do some scrabbling about or running (ha ha, slow jogging), or for tight spaces like in a crowd. If anybody wants to think outside the conventional box its a novel idea.

Another lover of the PRAT leather bag/backpack. Holds M9, 3 lenses and room for a few bits and pieces. Most stylish bag I have seen. Got mine from Monochrom.

It is my preferred bag for the M series. It holds everything:

M8 with 50

M7 with 35

15, 28, 75 and another 50

And weighs next to nothing.

 

For the other things people want to carry like laptop, book, drink, The Kid's spare clothes, toys and books; I have a backpack or another sling bag over the other shoulder.

Yes they are (to an extent). I would not swim with the bag, but I was caught in a heavy shower and the bag remained dry (water was repelled and did not soak into the canvas) and nothing came in through the zips.

I have the Domke F-5XB bag and the Domke Satchel J-803.

My gear: M9, 35 f/2, 50 f/2 and 90 f/2.8, ND and Pola filters, cable release, white balance disk, cleaning gear, blower, bubble level, extra batteries, SD cards and holder.

The F-5XB works but is very tight.

The J-803 is too big.

Is there something in between these two bags that still has that "I am not a camera bag look", at a reasonable price?

In reference to your comment which I bolded, might I suggest the Leica-M lens coupler. The 50 and 35 Summicrons can be mated back-to-back and won't be too tall for the bag. Depending on what 90/2.8 and 35/2 you have you might pair them also. I have the 4th-generation 35/2 and the "thin" 90 Tele-Elmarit and they fit stacked in an F5XB. I also from time to time add extra padded dividers to make the bag have 4 compartments. Another hint, an M body with lens attached will fit lens-down, body lying across the top of the other compartments.

 

I agree about the J-803, it's got quite some capacity. I recently used mine on a weekend trip and got my M8, 35/2, 90/2 and a Metz 54MZ3 in it plus a pair of trousers, shirt, change of underwear and socks, razor, brush, ziplock bag with TSA-approved little containers of liquids/gels, cell phone charger, and spare glasses in hard-shell case. In fact it was the only luggage I took.

Consider the Think Thank Urban Disguise - incredibly well made and with various models

to fit nearly any sized kit. Sounds like the 30 or the 40 would fit your needs. Rugged,

moisture resistant, attractive and affordable - less than half the price of the Hadley.

I think I may have posted something about a shoulder bag recently acquired. It came in its cardboard box with the markings of "carryall case". The label says "E. Leitz, inc., Rockleigh, New Jersey, USA. It is hard or stiff take your choice, the catalog is 98271. It is made from top grain cowhide, with a deep brown color. The shoulder strap fits securely and has an amount of padding. There is a sliding lock ( like on luggage) but no key. The interior is a lift off tray, the top containing areas for equipment. Lifting the lid( a cloth of some type) of the tray reveals a number of adjustable partitions. Lifting the lid all the way out and you have more storage. An 'R' 250 f 4 fits nicely, with room for another long lens, such as my 'R' 105-280 f 4.2. I remember seeing one of America's noted Leica photographers from the 60's and 70's carrying such a bag. And Tony Randall from the US tv show, " The Odd Couple", carrying a bag looking quite like mine as a prop for his career as a photographer. When Leitz/Leica said 'hard leather' they were not kidding. All the hardware is first rate. It could carry all my 'M' gear with room to spare. Nice thing is it looks just like a small carry on suitcase or briefcase.

Perhaps we all go through this bag thing but something that I have noticed recently, is that if the camera has a neck strap this goes in last and it is never easy unless i have a large Billingham pro and that is just too much most of the time. Same when I come to remove the camera, there is this strap crungled up on top and to the side. Considering that most of the time I carry the camera from the wrist I am now thinking that some of my bag problems might be solved merely by changing the neck strap for a wrist strap.

I bought a cheap (12 GBP) Chinese one off eBay - heck, it even has 'Leica' stamped on it. I'm now a convert to wrist straps - with an M grip.

 

Stephens sell what appears to be the same strap for 25 GBP, which isn't too bad since you won't have to wait for the package to arrive.

I've mentioned them before I'm sure but for me the Wrist Wonder is by far the most secure and at the same time comfortable strap I've ever used and have one on all my RF cameras these days.

For those of you using the ACAM1000 / Image Smith bag: I agree with all the positives. But to me it seems underequipped with space for wallet, phone and other stuff like that. How have you solved this aspect?

I'm the bag man of the decade (they're filling the porch, hanging up to the ceiling), but I've been using Fogg bags almost exclusively for the last couple of years.

They have just released a new version of their B Sharp bag - it's a little deeper than the old version, and has a front pocket specifically designed to hold an ipad together with a decent amount of photo gear.

 

I've been using one for a couple of weeks now, and it's rapidly become my all time favorite bag.

 

It comes in various colours, here are some pictures of one in Charcoal with Oak leather.

 

It's beautifully hand made by Nigel Fogg and bee berman in France. I've been dealing with them for a few years now, great service, and wonderful bags.
