Smallest Bag just for M9 and MATE for use in open car

I am doing the Rally des Alpes in June as co-driver in a 1952 C Type Jaguar (see pic below), in which space is at a premium, with effectively no luggage room at all. I would prefer to take my M9+MATE rather than my Ricoh GX200, which is what I usually take on these events. My Billingham M is too big. Any suggestions for a really small bag which would just fit an M9+MATE and a spare battery. An element of weatherproofing would be a bonus, as the C type has no roof and Swiss weather can be changeable - it snowed on this event two years ago.

Lucky man.

Hmmm, its bigger than you may want, but you could look at the Think Tank 'Change Up' bag. Here's why. It comes with a rain cape that slips over it, and its tough and pretty rain proof anyway. But here's the thing, you can wear it as either a shoulder bag, a waist bag, OR a chest bag. So depending on the belts in the car you could perhaps wear it on your chest for quick camera removal 'on the go'. The size would take your M9, WATE, and another lens though, plus it has zipped pockets aplenty that would take everything from documents to a bottle of water, so it may be to big.

It is not very watertight, but the neoprene bag will take just the M8/9, with its lens and maximally two batteries. It is protective enough to resist the bumping around. Sounds like fun! :)

Shouldn't you have a brown weathered long snooted never-ready case to keep up the vintage appearance? :D

That's a beautiful looking Jaguar. I hope it's as reliable as it is gorgeous looking.

Wilson, take a look at the Lowepro - Rezo TLZ 10. It's pretty small, although hard to tell from the pictures, and is a top loader. Also narrow at the bottom so will fit comfortably in your lap while offering quick & easy access to your M9. It's well-padded, probably also fairly water resistant and sells for under $20. Looking forward to seeing some pictures - have fun!

I've used the Rezo 120AW also for a similar minimal bag configuration with space even for a 2nd lens too. Kind of funky bags in that they zip around the back rather than unclip the front - that confuses me every time. They are pretty water resistant and the 120 even has a rain cover in the base.

Electrics by Lucas Prince of Darkness - hmmmm. Hope it is better than the '54 D Type it replaces, which went bang every time it came out of the garage. This one has been fettled for rallying rather than racing, so hopefully it might be a tad more reliable but we have a sweeper car full of tools and bits following us. I am putting my overalls in the chase car, as it is usually me up to my elbows in oil buried in the red hot innards of the broken down car, while the owner looks on.

Thanks to all for your kind suggestions. I think the Neoprene case with long front is my answer. I will just check with my local Leica dealer Arta in Nice, that it will fit over a MATE.

Please keep us posted on what you choose and how it works. I'm taking my '65 Alfa Spider Veloce on a rally later this summer and have a similar space problem in the cockpit but at least I'll have some trunk space!

You'll have a great time, Lucas electrics or not.

It could be worse. The electrics could be by Magneti Marelli rather than Lucas ;-}}

wow, lucky man :-)

That's a dream!

What about the small Billingham that you can get from Leica directly (costs something about 200 Euro or so).?? It takes a leica plus big lens or a Leica plus 2 small lenses.

If i don't forget it to take it with me, I will show it to you .......

On the other hand, such places are rarely clean, so a small textile bag from National Geographic will do it too? And when it has to stay dry, put alltogether in a plastic box :-)

Stephan,

I already have that Billingham - it is too big. I am being given very strict guidelines on what I can take. As this is a very serious regularity rally, I have to take lots of navigation equipment, map board, average speed tables, three large stop watches, big ruler, calculator, Potti map illuminator and a whole lot of other stuff. I am just very glad it is not the D type, where half the small passenger's foot well space is taken up by the exhaust manifold housing, which also gets extremely hot. I think the neoprene case and a zip-loc bag is the answer.

A bag I can thoroughly recommend which can hold as much or as little equipment as you require, is very lightweight, and importantly, is also weatherproof, can be purchased for a very nominal price at any branch of Tesco.

Cheers, Ken.
