First fell in love with an M3 when I borrowed one from a classmate in college thirty years ago. Bought one much later, and it is still going strong. Have recently had it CLAd, which included prism re-gluing.

The only thing the M3 lacks with comparison to it's more modern compatriots is the film loading system.

In case anyone isn't aware, DAG can modify the M3 loading to the M4/M6 loading and I've had mine modified thusly.

Having done that, it is my favorite camera for city-walking -- with a 50mm Summicron DR. In that same bag, I carry the 35mm Summicron V1 w/goggles and the 21mm Super-Angulon f3.4 w/finder. That outfit can cover just about anything I'll encounter on the street...

I love both my M3s.

The one on the left is a converted 2 stroke with a 50/1.4 Canon and the one on the right is a late single stroke with a 2.8 Elmar.

I've been lusting after one for years and finally made it happen last month. I found a 113XXXX series from late 1965 in really nice condition. I paired it with a 1960 Summicron 50mm Rigid and it's a luxurious, magical combo. I have dedicated it completely to B&W films and I think it will stay that way. It's true that there's nothing else like it.

What a wonderful thread and so many beautiful cameras -- camera porn at its best.

I've had an M3 for about a month, now -- and am blown away its smooth precision and beauty. My M9 is feeling ignored. As is my beloved IIIf and trusty Ikon. My wife's utterly puzzled by my behavior; "Is it really that good?"

Yes, yes and yes. What took me so long?

I had a pretty well used (worn) silver chrom M3. Old platings have been galvanically removed, small dents on brass repaired, brass polished and then professionally satin, black chrom plated. In reality it looks better than on my photos. Leicamater is original black.

I would have to add a couple more things to that list. I do love my M3 DS but I really miss having an internal light meter and I discovered that my 50mm cron, pre-asph version, focuses quite a bit closer than my M3 will track. So at times I can't get as close of a focus on something with my 50 cron on the M3 as I can with the 50 cron on my M6TTL.

The film loading thing never bothered me. Besides the two items I've listed above, the M3 is an absolute dream to work with.

I was tricked by that too, thought something was wrong with the RF. Solved all "your" complaints by buying an MP. I think of it as a brand new, slightly louder M3. (If you go the a la carte route and get the .85x VF you'll be just about there. ;) )

That is exactly my plan.

Just got an M3 a couple of weeks ago. Should pick up a 50mm 2.8 Elmar later in the year or a C sonar.

I just got an m3 and tried attaching my new 50mm lux. To my dismay I am unable to attach the lens onto the camera for some reason. I have attached the lens on my m-e and its smooth as, i.e. it's just an easy turn and I can hear it click into place, but having tried multiple times now with the m3 I am unable to hear it click into place. It just seems so tight and I'm not sure why coz I tried attaching my 35mm and it seems to go on easy.

Any thoughts?

Hello guys,

First post on this forum, even though I come from times to times to read a little bit about your adventures with these wonderful cameras... :)

Brief history about myself (haven't checked if there is a specific section in the forum to be completely honest...), almost 26 yo from Paris. I bought my very first Leica two years ago now after selling all my Nikon equipments... A really nice Leica M8 + Voigt. 35 1.4.

Since then, well, I must say I can't really think about any other camera except a Leica M!

Last year, I wanted to discover the analogic world and bought myself a really nice Leica M3 DS of 1955. First I used it with a Summarit 50 (old version from 1956) and since the beginning of the year, I sold it to buy a Summicron 50 DR (1961) which is amazing.

I'm OK now and I don't need anything else, only some TriX rolls (and from time to times, some Portra as well!), and that's all!

It's such a great pleasure to use this camera daily, really!

Here is a picture of my beloved couple!

See you around guys & cheers from Paris!
