Kyler. Posted May 6, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 6, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi guys, I am about to buy a black m8.2 and I am considering a case for a few reasons, 1. To protect the camera 2. So when I'm looking through the rangefinder, my nose doesn't smudge the LCD screen ( I use left eye) 3. For a better gripping of the camera. Now my questin to you is, do you have a case, if so, which one, and why? I really like the look of the black paint m8.2 but a case would change it's look. What are your thoughts on using a case for the m8? thanks. Kyle

Jeff S Posted May 7, 2010 Share #2 Posted May 7, 2010 Only way to find out is to try it first. This is a very personal thing. Some swear by them, some not. Just as some swear by the grip, or the Thumbs Up, or the soft releases, or third party covers, etc. Really, whatever works for you. I never used a case or any accessory on my film Ms, so the M8.2 feels very natural in my hands. Never a slip, the LCD wipes clean (and if there was a cover there, I couldn't use the screen easily), and my camera still looks great after its initial year + of constant use. Enjoy shooting. You can always add to your camera later. Jeff
seattlesteve Posted May 7, 2010 Share #3 Posted May 7, 2010 No case for me. I have a grip on mine for functionality, otherwise it's naked.
trs Posted May 7, 2010 Share #4 Posted May 7, 2010 I don't have one for M8. But, do have one for M6. I like it naked better though, but during transportation, it is convinient to protect the camera. Half case is fine I think, but full case gets on the when I actually use the camera. Even just half case make camera feel much bigger. I like the smallness of M bodies. Gerard Posted May 7, 2010 Share #5 Posted May 7, 2010 Everyone will have their own preferance. Me; I like it naked with a Gordy's strap - it's the way it was meant to be. ;-)
giordano Posted May 7, 2010 Share #6 Posted May 7, 2010 No. The camera's bulky enough already.
Pintpot Posted May 7, 2010 Share #7 Posted May 7, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi I have a grip, this makes for better holding. But it adds weight, to protect the camera I use a neoprene case when in my walking backpack. Other than that my kit, M8 + 25mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm + all the usual bits live in a small billingham bag. May get a small patch of 'grip-tack' for the back of the M8 this weekend (less weight than a thumbs up) I think the grip is the best extra you could buy, however it costs a bit! WigglePig Posted May 7, 2010 Share #8 Posted May 7, 2010 I have the "leather camera protector" supplied by Leica. It works well and is pretty nicely made. On the other hand, I bought a (used) Luigi half-case for my M2 the other day and it fits and feels somewhat better. I think I might be tempted to spring the extra cash for a Luigi for my M8, especially if he'll make one with no rear cutout or flap. Jark89 Posted May 7, 2010 Share #9 Posted May 7, 2010 I had a leather half-case for my M8, but decided to let it go. At first, I bought it for aesthetics as well as protection. In use, I also found it muffled the shutter noise quite a bit, which pleased me. However, it also made the camera slightly larger. I have small hands, so the slight extra bulk probably affected me more than someone with larger hands. Also it got tiring having to take it off in order to get at the battery + SD card. I now just use the M8 as-is, plus a Thumbs-up. I'm enjoying the smaller size very much, but do miss the protection & quieter shutter sound. Oh well, can have it all right? stunsworth Posted May 7, 2010 Share #10 Posted May 7, 2010 I've never used a case on any M (2, 3, 6, 8). Nose grease wipes off, and the Leica grip provides extra support if that's what you want.
steamboat Posted May 7, 2010 Share #11 Posted May 7, 2010 I do not have a case for my M8.2. I don't even carry it in a bag - it goes on my shoulder or around my neck depending. AND it goes everywhere with me so I always have it. The everready cases are a personal preference so really it's up to you what you're comfortable with (or without). Good luck with your photography. JazzyMac Posted May 7, 2010 Share #12 Posted May 7, 2010 No case because I still can't find a decent one that fits my style.
rhom Posted May 7, 2010 Share #13 Posted May 7, 2010 Hi Kyle, I bought a used Luigi half-case, the model with Luigi's built-in grip, for my M8. After trying it for several months, I no longer use it because I like the overall smaller size and weight without the case. I know that the case cannot weigh much, but you can definitely feel the difference. Don't get me wrong, the Luigi case is very nicely made, soft, and smells like the fine leather that it is. I just prefer not using it. I also did not prefer the matching Luigi Deluxe Strap. The Leica strap that comes with the camera is better, because the right side connector (on the shutter release side) does not get in the way of shooting. The Luigi strap, when used in conjunction with the Luigi half-case, binds too tightly to the strap lug area (the thickness of the half-case leather decreases the clearance between the strap lug & strap connector). This might "wear in" in time, but it will probably blemish the leather on the case in doing so. I have reverted to protecting my M8 with a Zing case (small SLR size). It works great when I am travelling light. Best, Rick
ampguy Posted May 7, 2010 Share #14 Posted May 7, 2010 I like the Zhou on the M8 (mine is for sale, US only) - but I shoot with R eye, and it does not have a flap over the LCD. It was also a very tight fit for the first 5-10 battery/card changes, but is now just right. Also have a Gordy's strap on it, which gives a good grip and protects the M8 very well. I have a Luigi case for my M6, much better build quality, but thicker. So I wouldn't want that case on my M8, it would just be too bulky. Even with the M6, if I know I'll be changing rolls a lot, I don't use the Luigi case.
wilfredo Posted May 8, 2010 Share #15 Posted May 8, 2010 Kyler, I use a Luigi half case on my M8. I like taking good care of my gear, and the grip on it is excellent. It also protects the LCD screen. I also like how it looks, making the camera look vintage and hence, less intrusive. That's me in the photo with my M8 and Luigi half case :-) Welcome, dear visitor! falkk Posted May 8, 2010 Share #16 Posted May 8, 2010 Dear Wilfredo, just how long have you been using the Leica with the half case? You seem to be a bit younger in that photo?? Impressive... I am using a Luigi-Half-Case with built-in grip. And the detachable long-nose. I do love it, but I can understand our friends here. Although it can obviously not add a lot of weight, it feels more heavy with the case. And slightly bigger. I use it for protection. Weight and bulk is not a problem for me - yet. I might take it off sometimes... But for now, I love the Luigi-case. Kyler, I use a Luigi half case on my M8. I like taking good care of my gear, and the grip on it is excellent. Kyler. Posted May 8, 2010 Author Share #19 Posted May 8, 2010 Thanks guys, Now I need your opinion for color of the case. I'll be getting the black m8.2. Should I get a black case to keep it stealth and all or should I get the natural aged brown which makes it look very nice and oldish? What would you choose? Thanks again, Kyle
Vern Dewit Posted May 8, 2010 Share #20 Posted May 8, 2010 I use the Luigi half case and love it. It also looks nice... The only issue I'm going to have now is that I'm getting a Thumbs-Up and it won't fit with this version of the case... I'm going to see if I can find a local leather worker to cut my case to fit the Thumbs-Up. Anyone else had to do this?
