wlaidlaw Posted February 6, 2021 Share #14582 Posted February 6, 2021 It must be a low production car from the early 70’s as those are stock Lucas tail lights made for coachbuilt vans. Wilson

Rarer than the common-or-garden '62 Ferrari GTO for instance. Not quite as pretty as the latter, though............ Philip. NigelG Posted February 7, 2021 Share #14586 Posted February 7, 2021 I was hoping to let someone step in as I’m tied up tomorrow hence the wink - I think your second photo is rather easier (though not easier on the eye!)

Graham (G4FUJ) Posted February 7, 2021 Share #14588 Posted February 7, 2021 From the last photo looks like a Clan Crusader?

Yes; the positioning and design of the headlamps are similar for both the Crusader and this car and both also appeared at almost the same time but the car here was powered by something three times the cubic capacity. a.j.z Posted February 7, 2021 Share #14590 Posted February 7, 2021 Marcos Mantis M70 from 1970 or 1971
a.j.z Posted February 7, 2021 Share #14591 Posted February 7, 2021 (edited) I found some information here http://www.simoncars.co.uk/marcos/mantis.html „However, the Mantis M70 was the wrong car at the wrong time, and the company was already under financial strain and folded in 1972.“ I think no time was right for this car ... The markets do not always work, but definitely in this case. Edited February 7, 2021 by a.j.z
wlaidlaw Posted February 7, 2021 Share #14592 Posted February 7, 2021 I am praying I don’t have to see it again. Marcos did make a couple of the ugliest cars ever. Their first, the Xylon, although quite successful racing was no oil painting and was nicknamed “The Ugly Duckling”. A friend had a GT2 Chevy small block engined Marcos on order in around 2006/7 but it never arrived and he struggled to get his deposit back. a.j.z Posted February 7, 2021 Share #14593 Posted February 7, 2021 The GT was not a beauty, but acceptable (at least some versions)
Rona!d Posted February 7, 2021 Share #14594 Posted February 7, 2021 Poor mans Espada was the nicest description it ever got. They really thought they could export it to the US, otherwise they would have installed the 6cyl. Capri engine to the used Capri rear axle instead of the TR6 engine which passed US emission laws better.

According to the owner (and backed-up by the reg. plate) it is a 1970 example. He was a very amiable chap who told me he took the Mantis on European tours two or three times each year and it was a very capable, comfortable cruiser which was (in his words) "better than par-for-the-course in the reliability stakes considering it's a British car from the early '70s.". I'm not entirely sure quite how reliable that phrase might actually mean... As far as the Marcos GT is concerned an old school friend - who was named Marcus - built one up for himself in the early '80s. It was a bit of a hoot in some ways but talk about being Basic! The seats - as is well-known - were part of the rear bulkhead and the pedal-box was adjustable for leg-length! As you are all, clearly, very eager to see the car once more (and I do mean only once more!) - this time in all her elegant beauty - here she is; Welcome, dear visitor! PS : I have to say I do actually quite like the look of the Mantis from the rear and rear 3/4. Lights apart it's a bit like the Towns-designed Aston DBS. NigelG Posted February 7, 2021 Share #14596 Posted February 7, 2021 I can’t help thinking it would have looked a whole lot better with faired-in headlights, although the “swoopy-droopy” side profile is an acquired taste. Still surprised to remember the earlier equally(?) hideous Xylon Wilson mentioned was designed by Frank Costin. I sometimes wonder if a Marcos book would sell better without illustrations... Such a shame they didn’t make a road version of their other Mantis - the 1968 Mantis XP racer built for the 1968 Le Mans (but which only ever ran at Spa earlier in the same year). Apologies for the cringey “cool” site link but this has the best pics of the restored racer imho https://www.thecoolist.com/marcos-mantis-xp/ 2
a.j.z Posted February 7, 2021 Share #14597 Posted February 7, 2021 The XP is pretty spectacular in particular considering that it is from1968. How can the riddle car and this one have the same name? They have as much in common as a classic Ghibli and the contemporary saloon.

I like the 'without illustrations' suggestion............ I had never heard of the XP Mantis before I checked-up on my 'Mantis facts' yesterday and found it hard to believe, at first glance, that it dated from '68! REALLY like the look of that one! Corny title notwithstanding thanks for the link! Of course if the Mantis had been out of sight from Spa '68 until the end of it's restoration 2010 I suppose that would explain why it's been pretty-much under-the-radar for the in-between years.
