Advertisement Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Hi wlaidlaw, Take a look here Name this car..... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stuny Posted July 17, 2014 Share #6582 Posted July 17, 2014 The wooden wheel and chain drive suggest early 20th Century, and the color suggest French.
wlaidlaw Posted July 18, 2014 Share #6583 Posted July 18, 2014 The chain drive is the next door car but French yes. This is not chain drive but mid engined. Wilson
stuny Posted July 18, 2014 Share #6584 Posted July 18, 2014 (edited) I'm glad to read that. The photo did not make sense as I perceived it. Looking at it again with that knowledge suggests we're looking at the bow rather than the stern, which is rather unusual. That should be a dead give-away if I had ever seen this car or photos of it. DigitalHeMan Posted July 18, 2014 Share #6585 Posted July 18, 2014 Maybe a Darmont cycle car?
wlaidlaw Posted July 18, 2014 Share #6586 Posted July 18, 2014 Maybe a Darmont cycle car? Long way off. Much faster than that. Wilson

Out of the 7 or 8 of this particular model built, I think maybe only one remains. However photos of it in period are quite common, due to its fame. wlaidlaw Posted July 19, 2014 Share #6588 Posted July 19, 2014 Another hint. When built, this car was probably the fastest in the world. Wilson

wlaidlaw Posted July 20, 2014 Share #6590 Posted July 20, 2014 Correct. This is I think the only one left complete at the Cité de L’Automobile (Schlumpf) in Mulhouse. I believe there are parts of another one in the USA. This car got the land speed record on of all places, Le Promenade des Anglais in Nice. For those of us who know this road today, it is six lanes of near stationary traffic. Unlike many cars in this museum, this one looks in reasonable condition, without cracks and splits in its artillery wheels. One of the things on my bucket list is to drive a steam car. stuny Posted July 23, 2014 Share #6591 Posted July 23, 2014 Günter - It's your turn to post a mystery car for us.
stuny Posted July 26, 2014 Share #6592 Posted July 26, 2014 Vanellus is indisposed, and not able to show us the next puzzle. Other than Wilson, Rona|d and me, who have posted here quite a bit, anyone who'd like to post the next mystery car please do so. We're waiting. wlaidlaw Posted July 27, 2014 Share #6593 Posted July 27, 2014 Just to keep you amused pro tem, here is a double puzzle, both photos taken this morning. I turned down a drive of car 1 to drive car 2 instead, because the traffic was quite heavy and slow. Wilson Welcome, dear visitor! stuny Posted July 27, 2014 Share #6594 Posted July 27, 2014 I guess that's Lalique on #2 which no doubt narrows down the field.
wlaidlaw Posted July 27, 2014 Share #6595 Posted July 27, 2014 Yes Lalique. I was going to take a picture of the spectacular engine on this car but to open the bonnet, you have to turn the mascot sideways and it did not want to turn. The mechanic who looks after the car, is going to gently warm the mount with a hot air gun, turn and remove the mascot, then re-assemble with some teflon/silicone grease, so that it will not bind in future. There may also have been some grit got in the mount. Wilson
gmo Posted July 29, 2014 Share #6596 Posted July 29, 2014 I've waited for the more knowledgeable people to step in before I did my Google work. Since none came forward I think that you did not get into a Mclaren 650S because you preferred a Bugatti T57. Regards Gerd
wlaidlaw Posted July 29, 2014 Share #6597 Posted July 29, 2014 Well done Gerd, As you say a new 650S and one of the two original T57SC supercharged low chassis cars (other 57S cars were later converted in the factory to SC specification by adding a supercharger). This one was bodied by the local coach builder in Molsheim, Gangloff. Your turn. Wilson Welcome, dear visitor! gmo Posted July 29, 2014 Share #6598 Posted July 29, 2014 Thanks Wilson, Both very nice cars and it must have been a tough decision you had to make. Anyhow here's the new one, not to complicated I think and there is a clue in the picture. Welcome, dear visitor! pop Posted July 29, 2014 Share #6599 Posted July 29, 2014 To judge by the hose, it runs on water, doesn't it?
wlaidlaw Posted July 29, 2014 Share #6600 Posted July 29, 2014 Not a hard decision. It is not a lot of fun driving an extreme performance car in heavy traffic. I will wait until late September, when most of the holidaymakers have gone home and drive it then. I was very impressed with its predecessor the 12C, when I drove it last year and apparently it is a big advance. The T57SC is less nice than you might think. The steering is very heavy and the power is quite high up in the rev range and I think the 175HP must be quite small horses. Given the choice, I would rather drive a Lagonda M45, which is nearly as quick, has better brakes and steering and a far better gearbox.
