Ronald,

I think this is an early small back window 356B. It is a Carrera, I would guess originally 1500cc but I seem to recall this one was now either 1700 or 1800cc. I really like 356’s but I would not have a Carrera as a gift. That is the most finicky, unreliable engine I have ever worked on. A new replacement Carrera 4 cam engine is now an eye-watering $125,000 and to think we used to stick them in VW Beetles for rallycrossing. :o

When you can get a cheap, torquey, reliable 2L pushrod 356 engine to produce 140 to 150 BHP, why on earth put up with the pain of a Carrera, where you have to change the oil every 1000 miles and adjust the valve drive train and clearances every 3000.

A 2 litre pushrod, disc braked C, with a WEVO gear change, would be my perfect 356. As I get older, I am thinking of changing my rally 3.3L 911RS for a much gentler car like that.

The next car can be posted by anybody who likes to present us a car but was never quick enough to get the chance! So guys, newbees, come on and take your chance!

Wilson, agree about the Carrera engine. Today you get nice hp out of "better behaving" engines. I remember 130 hp were not a big problem in an 1.8 ltr beetle when I had my hot aircooled time. Also agree it would be a nice idea to switch from your 911 to "your" 356.

Some (once) reliable stuff get´s expensive like mad. The other day I discussed having a nice 23 window bus as a classic car for our princesses instead of several small beetles, but a good one went for around 125 Grands at the last Scottsdale auction. Some years ago I could have bought a nice refined 328 Roadster for that (or a nice W111 cabrio today).

p.s. Forgot the early Bs (1960) had smaller windows. 1961 the larger windows were introduced.
