 I was guessing it was either Austrian or German but my racing annuals from that period only show the later Monopoletta, RJS and BJR cars from that part of Europe and they were all rear engined. The only front engined car I could find was an early prototype Martin but not even sure it raced, as rear engine cars were totally dominant, Cooper, Kieft etc.

Judging by some of the background paraphernalia (I have absolutely no idea what the car itself might be) it could very well be German? Connections with Porsche or M-Benz?

Very pretty tail-treatment! Looking forward to see how this one develops and plays-out.

Yes to German (car and driver). No Puch engine but also German from a once big motorcycle producer that went bankrupt in 1984 and recently was revived in China (as many others).

There is no obvious Porsche or Mercedes link. 

The car participated in the German Formula 3 series in 1948.

My guess would be an MZ engine. They went bust in 1993 and there were then all sorts of shenanigans regarding the relaunch, resulting in owners suing banks and banks suing owners and the winners were? - The lawyers.

That is the only 500 car that the 500 owners association lists with a Zundapp engine. There is a car called a Wehrlin which looks like your image but had a JAP engine.

As it is apparently impossible to find as the information on this care is rare and only available on German language websites, I disclose the car:  It is a Ludewig-Eigenbau - driver and constructor was Rolf Ludewig.

The car started in the German Formula 3 Championship in 1948 (not very successful) - it is #14 on this list to be found on formel3guide.com:

Built 1948, 500 ccm, 33 hp, vmax 176 km/h, 220 kg, two separate break systems.

Wilson, the 500 owners association has a „Ludwig-Eigenbau“ but this is a different car (with similar name): https://500race.org/marques/ludwig-eigenbau/ It does not feature the Ludewig (maybe they do not cover 1948).

The car in the museum has what look like Ford Model A wheels (bolt on spoked), rather than the wheels in the period photo, which look like they come off the track bogies of a Kettenkrad German Army tracked three wheeler. I suspect the engine variations are from blowing up engine #1 and then seeing what the local scrapyard has going cheap for engines #2 or #3.
