Andy,

His grandson Oliver Tomlin still hill climbs this car, which has reverted to a Mercury engine but with 4 downdraft twin choke Weber carburettors.

Good looking competition car :)

Ollie,  is campaigning several cars on the hills depending on the event.  I last saw him a few weeks ago at Prescott in a Morgen 3 Wheeler, I think with a JAP engine.  Unfortunately didn't have enough time to go and photograph it.

Graham,

I suspect it is looking a whole lot better than when I had it, where a lot of the dark red paint (Dulux Gloss?) was coming off and the paint stripper I had applied to the rear half, then started to lift all the layers of canvas and epoxy. When Phil Chapman reacquired it in 1970, there was a lot of head shaking over the dreadful state of the body work, which he thought non-salvageable but as he still had the moulds, a new body might be the way to go. Delighted that it is still in use, as is the Healey 3000 I used to have (YMO300). The one that seems to have totally disappeared is the space framed Morgan 4/4 with a chassis by Brian Waite (ex AC and Aston Martin chassis designer) with the Martin F2 engine, which I sold in 1971 or 72.

Don’t know the name of it without googling, but I recognise it as one of those really ugly American cars made to look like somethiing from the 1930s - underneath, it’s probably some ubiquitous GM chasis and engine.

Sorry to be dismissive …

Yes, an Excalibur, Series 5 Phaeton from 1985 to be precise. It allegedly was designed after a 1928 Mercedes SSK but, well … (I don’t expect likes for the photos). Here is more information on this oddity: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Excalibur_(automobile)

The funny thing is that it participated in a classic car event, as being built in 1985 it qualifies as classic car (btw: in German we say „Oldtimer“ and everybody thinks that this word is also used by English speakers 😉).

The Excalibur (I got the name wrong on my first guess, I said Excelsior) gives the Panther 6 (6 wheels) a good run for its money as being a pointless hideous object. I think most of the British registered ones have now been painted white and are used for weddings in Newcastle.
