It must be a low production car from the early 70’s...

Absolutely, Wilson. Rarer than the common-or-garden '62 Ferrari GTO for instance.

Not quite as pretty as the latter, though............

From the last photo looks like a Clan Crusader?

Ah! No, Graham, not a Clan.

Yes; the positioning and design of the headlamps are similar for both the Crusader and this car and both also appeared at almost the same time but the car here was powered by something three times the cubic capacity.

For everyone's delectation I will post another snap!

I found some information here http://www.simoncars.co.uk/marcos/mantis.html

However, the Mantis M70 was the wrong car at the wrong time, and the company was already under financial strain and folded in 1972.“

I think no time was right for this car ...

The  markets do not always work, but definitely in this case.

I am praying I don’t have to see it again. Marcos did make a couple of the ugliest cars ever. Their first, the Xylon, although quite successful racing was no oil painting and was nicknamed “The Ugly Duckling”. A friend had a GT2 Chevy small block engined Marcos on order in around 2006/7 but it never arrived and he struggled to get his deposit back.

Poor mans Espada was the nicest description it ever got. They really thought they could export it to the US, otherwise they would have installed the 6cyl. Capri engine to the used Capri rear axle instead of the TR6 engine which passed US emission laws better.

Marcos Mantis M70 from 1970 or 1971

Absolutely spot-on, Andreas. According to the owner (and backed-up by the reg. plate) it is a 1970 example.

He was a very amiable chap who told me he took the Mantis on European tours two or three times each year and it was a very capable, comfortable cruiser which was (in his words) "better than par-for-the-course in the reliability stakes considering it's a British car from the early '70s.". I'm not entirely sure quite how reliable that phrase might actually mean...

As far as the Marcos GT is concerned an old school friend - who was named Marcus - built one up for himself in the early '80s. It was a bit of a hoot in some ways but talk about being Basic! The seats - as is well-known - were part of the rear bulkhead and the pedal-box was adjustable for leg-length!

As you are all, clearly, very eager to see the car once more (and I do mean only once more!) - this time in all her elegant beauty - here she is;

Over to you, Andreas!

PS : I have to say I do actually quite like the look of the Mantis from the rear and rear 3/4. Lights apart it's a bit like the Towns-designed Aston DBS.

I can’t help thinking it would have looked a whole lot better with faired-in headlights, although the “swoopy-droopy” side profile is an acquired taste.

Still surprised to remember the earlier equally(?) hideous Xylon Wilson mentioned was designed by Frank Costin. I sometimes wonder if a Marcos book would sell better without illustrations...

Such a shame they didn’t make a road version of their other Mantis - the 1968 Mantis XP racer built for the 1968 Le Mans (but which only ever ran at Spa earlier in the same year).

Apologies for the cringey “cool” site link but this has the best pics of the restored racer imho

If somebody who is watching the thread secretly and now wants to join or has not posted in a while, please go ahead. It is not necessary to choose obscure or rare cars 😉

Otherwise I will provide the next riddle later.

As far as the headlamps are concerned I was thinking that something along the lines of BB 365 / 512 twin-lamp pop-up units would have been a far more attractive solution that the rectangular boxes which were chosen.

I like the 'without illustrations' suggestion............

I had never heard of the XP Mantis before I checked-up on my 'Mantis facts' yesterday and found it hard to believe, at first glance, that it dated from '68! REALLY like the look of that one! Corny title notwithstanding thanks for the link! Of course if the Mantis had been out of sight from Spa '68 until the end of it's restoration 2010 I suppose that would explain why it's been pretty-much under-the-radar for the in-between years.

Philip.
