a.j.z Posted September 8, 2018 Share #11341 Posted September 8, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks, Stuart! Wilson's hint actually was very helpful, because as everybody know, Huayra is a Bolivian/Peruvian wind god ;-) I will post a new one later today. wlaidlaw Posted September 8, 2018 Share #11343 Posted September 8, 2018 I hope Signore Pagani has put better air conditioning in the Huayra. My sister in law briefly had a 7 litre Zonda S, which when she damaged her shoulder, I had to go and pick up from an airport and drive to her house. In mid July in the south of France, after half an hour I knew just what a barbecue chicken feels like. Apparently it used the refrigerating compressor off a Fiat Punto, which was not used to dealing with a single layer black carbon fibre roof, massive heat soak from a large engine and a huge expanse of windscreen. Jeremy Clarkson would have described the cooled air stream as being feebler than a butterfly fart. The windows only went part of the way down as well. It certainly was very quick with around 700BHP but so wide that you did not feel like using the power often. That is the problem with many modern supercars, they are just too wide for European roads. That is why it is more fun driving a Caterham 7, air cooled old Porsches or my Three Wheeler Morgan (on one of the very rare days it deigns not to break down) because you can actually extend the car a bit. abrewer Posted September 8, 2018 Share #11344 Posted September 8, 2018 That is the problem with many modern supercars, they are just too wide for European roads. Is it that the cars are wide to induce more ground effects on the bottom of the chassis?
a.j.z Posted September 8, 2018 Share #11345 Posted September 8, 2018 I think so. Wilson, I agree but most of these cars end up in tiled garages any way.
wlaidlaw Posted September 8, 2018 Share #11346 Posted September 8, 2018 Is it that the cars are wide to induce more ground effects on the bottom of the chassis? I think it is a combination of that and wide track to lower the roll centre plus the width of tyres. My Panamera has 325 width 21" tyres at the back.

a.j.z Posted September 9, 2018 Share #11350 Posted September 9, 2018 Yes, something like that. Small producer. Although the driving performance is maybe not the same.

stuny Posted September 10, 2018 Share #11353 Posted September 10, 2018 Since the headlights are round, it's unlikely this is a recent design.
a.j.z Posted September 10, 2018 Share #11354 Posted September 10, 2018 Correct. We are at the end of sixties/beginning of 70s
stuny Posted September 10, 2018 Share #11355 Posted September 10, 2018 The headlights are also sealed beam construction, which until recently, though far outdated, was the only type permitted in the US. this suggests the car might be one exported to or made in the US. a.j.z Posted September 10, 2018 Share #11356 Posted September 10, 2018 Not made in the US (rather the opposite in political terms in the 70s). The country of origin as such does not exist any more and I very much doubt that the cars were exported to the US but they were influenced by US design, which appears to be the reason for headlights. It is based on a Wartburg. Melkus RS1000 - I posted one of the earlier racing Melkus cars some time ago. Wilson Correct. Here is more information on the car: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melkus_RS_1000 Your turn, Wilson. Welcome, dear visitor! IkarusJohn Posted September 10, 2018 Share #11360 Posted September 10, 2018 Yes, the DDR (GDR). It is based on a Wartburg. So, not only an ugly copy of the Ferrari GTO, it was also slow? Was the body made of cardboard? (okay, that was the Trabant, but the Wartburg seems to have been equally bad).
