I hope Signore Pagani has put better air conditioning in the Huayra. My sister in law briefly had a 7 litre Zonda S, which when she damaged her shoulder, I had to go and pick up from an airport and drive to her house. In mid July in the south of France, after half an hour I knew just what a barbecue chicken feels like. Apparently it used the refrigerating compressor off a Fiat Punto, which was not used to dealing with a single layer black carbon fibre roof, massive heat soak from a large engine and a huge expanse of windscreen. Jeremy Clarkson would have described the cooled air stream as being feebler than a butterfly fart. The windows only went part of the way down as well. It certainly was very quick with around 700BHP but so wide that you did not feel like using the power often.

That is the problem with many modern supercars, they are just too wide for European roads. That is why it is more fun driving a Caterham 7, air cooled old Porsches or my Three Wheeler Morgan (on one of the very rare days it deigns not to break down) because you can actually extend the car a bit.

Is it that the cars are wide to induce more ground effects on the bottom of the chassis?

I think it is a combination of that and wide track to lower the roll centre plus the width of tyres. My Panamera has 325 width 21" tyres at the back.

Not made in the US (rather the opposite in political terms in the 70s). The country of origin as such does not exist any more and I very much doubt that the cars were exported to the US but they were influenced by US design, which appears to be the reason for headlights.

That makes me think of Eastern Europe, possibly even the Soviet Union or of one of the satellites.

Yes, the DDR (GDR). It is based on a Wartburg.

Melkus RS1000 - I posted one of the earlier racing Melkus cars some time ago.

Correct. Here is more information on the car: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melkus_RS_1000

Your turn, Wilson.
